I have a new Cox .09 and I would like some ideas for increasing it's power. We are going to race planes with .09 being the largest allowed power....but...hop ups are allowed and I want the fastest .09 on the planet!!!! Would appreciate any hop up ideas for this engine. Thanks.

One of the expensive Russian motors if you are serious.  Maybe Fora or Cyclon has one.  Otherwise, my AP .09 was only slightly better than the TD.  Drill out the venturi as far as you dare, and run a bladder or backplate pressure.  A bit more compression, and lighten the piston if you have the machinery.  Nitro is good.

Buy some replacement cranks as you will need them if you are going to race a TD 09 at max HP.

The Cox .09 TD's crank is weak when used as a race engine.   You can use crankase pressure for the fuel tank and bore out the intake venturi a little more, then you'll be in business.

You probably have the Ucktam .09.  You are lucky it came with the pipe.  I don't think they do any more, and I think the timing on the motor is for a pipe on the new ones too.

Hi Steve: I would check with COX INT'L WEBSITE, and ask if this is a good idea as they have purchased the Cox engine , and parts company.

Cheers!!!

Steve, is this for a control-line or RC model? If it's RC are you talking Goodyear or Quicky design?

I had an idea for a Formula-10 some years ago and thought an .09 model for Goodyear should probably be about 250 square inch wing area. Half-a was 200" and Quarter Midget (.15 engines) was 300." With radio gear so much lighter now an .09 should be pretty fast.

If you took an existing QM design you could shrink the plan to about 91% linear measurements and get pretty close to 250 sq in. I did shrink a Miss Dara plan and it looked pretty good.

The Cox TD .09 is a great engine but I was going to use more modern and rugged ball-bearing schneurle-ported engines and picked up a CS .09 and an SY .09 but never got to follow-up on the project.

There are newer engines like the FORA and a few others now that would be even better.

I sold off my SY and CS but still have tuned pipes for the CS and an UCTKAM. Hopefully a specialty prop-maker could make some appropriate props to get the most out of these newer engines.

The UCTKAM is a very heavy engine and another choice would be the old Webra .109, depending on engine size limit.

We are just now getting some basic rules. Your wing suggestions seem about right. Thanks.
