I am currently building 3 planes one of which is a motorglider which will have airbrakes, flaps and retract U/C. I expect over a period of time to have a few more planes of various types.

I am about to buy into a system and do not wish to have several TX and have narrowed my choices to either a Futaba T8FG Super or the JR XG8. I do not fully understand the acronyms re the TX/RX protocols but what I have read is that the RXs for the JR system are not backwards compatible. As I am starting from scratch this may not be an issue for me but the cost would be.

Is the Futaba system backwards compatible with older RXs and are clones available cheaply for it. What are the relative costs for RXs in the 6 – 8 channel range either gunuine or clones. Likewise re costs for RXs and  clones for the JRXG8 system.

Thanks

When you say Older receivers, do you mean strictly 2.4 receivers or 72Mhz receivers as well?

I am currently using the JR XP9303 which is a modular radio. When I first bought it, it used 72Mhz RF modules. Soon after, when Spektrum introduced the first 2.4Ghz radios, I bought the Spektrum 2.4 DSM2 RF module and started using Spektrum receivers. JR started offering non modular 2.4 radios using Spektrum technology. These included the X9303, 11X, and 12X. These are compatible with any Spektrum or JR DSM2 or DSMX receiver. With my XP9303 I can also use modules supplied by other 2.4 radio manufacturers. JR eventually came out with the XG line of 2.4 radios using a DMSS 2.4 protocol that is not Backwardly compatible with any Spektrum DSM2 or DSMX receiver.

The two 2.4 protocols DSM2 and DSMX are compatible with each other such that a DSMX transmitter will work with both a DSM2 or DSMX receiver and a DSMX receiver will work with either a DSM2 or DSMX transmitter.

Hobby King offers inexpensive Orange DSM2 compatible receivers for JR/Spektrum DSM2/DSMX transmitters.

Thanks for the res[ponse. As I said the naming/acronyms do not mean much to me. My understanding is that I would be only using 24Hz system as it will be all new. I have read in the reviews of the JR XG8 that it is new technology and is not backwards compatible. I guess withe respect to this unit only, not the previous versions that you have or familiar with, is if there are any cheaper rx are available that would be compatible with this new system

Thanks

I would not expect the names of the protocols to mean much to you. Due to the proprietary nature of 2.4 radios, each manufacturer had to come up with their own version and none are compatible with each other. As I said, JR used Spektrum protocols for their first 2.4 radios and now have their own protocol in the XG line, as well.

I am not aware of cheap clone receivers using JR's newer DMSS protocol, yet. There are threads covering every model of each manufacturer's radios.

Futaba has a number of different protocols such as FASST, FASSest, FHSS, S-FHSS. You will have to look at their web site to see which protocol is compatible with which model radio. There are cheaper receivers from 3rd party manufacturers, such as Hobby King, that will work with Futaba 2.4 radios.

Clive,
I can help you with the 8FG Super. All recievers (Rx) used with the 8fg are of the FASST type. a name brand futaba 7 channel Rx costs $90, 8 channel $130, 14 channel $200 . I could go into the 'S bus" system and probably confuse you but basically it utilizes less wires to use multiple servos. Nessesary components can be found made by Futaba sold by Tower Hobbies or aftermarket components sold by Hobbyking.

At Hobbyking you can get aftermarket Rx's "Frsky brand" that are FASST Compatable costing 7 channel $23 8 channel $38, there are other brands at hobbyking that are cheaper yet.

Also, the 8fg super will fullfill all your needs flying gliders, planes or copters and Im sure that the JR XG8 would be a compatable radio as well. I recently purchased my 8FG super at tower, they still have $50.00 off if you spend $400 and the radio also comes with an extra reciever, $400 for Transmitter, 2 recievers, charger etc, a great deal.

Perhaps I misread this, but the JR XG8 is not compatible with the Futaba 8FG.

Sorry,
I didnt mean that the Rx's and other components will work between the two but that both the 8FG and JR XG8 are good choices or compatable to his needs.
