I too have used poplar many times over the years in my models. I also dabble in furniture building too, poplar is a very popular secondary and sub structure wood for upolstered chairs and couches.

Poplar accepts screws and nails without splitting, has reasonable weight and strength, and lacking pitch and oils glues well so does work well as a furniture sub structure.
