Hello,
I just got a hold of the new Great Planes Dirty Birdie ARF. Has anyone put a rear exhaust with a pipe down the side in one? The old wood one I built, it was an easy set up to deal with, never had to take the pipe off like the side exhaust did.

Also looking for a real strong rear exhaust like an OPS or Rossi if anyone has one to part with.

Thanks
Jorge

Why not a side exhaust , much easier to find a header than a wrap around version.

Jorge, Rossi engines are coming up on Ebay all the time. I have seen them on RCU and RCG too. I think it would be possible to do. You would want to install a sub floor that can be made of balsa with some light glass on both sides. The big consern I would have is to get the header, fuel tank and nose retract to all fit in the nose. Here is a pic of my unlimited warbird pylon airplane. It's  smaller then a Dirty Birdy so with a little thought I'm sure you can figure it out.

Jorge,
I would put a Jett in it..... Dub Jett's BSE-90L. You would have one of the fastest Dirty Birds ever to fly.

Jorge,

Check with Ralph White as he and his son have one with a OS RF, That he flew in a contest we had this year !!
That thing was a rocket ship and flew great , You will have to get him to tell you what all they did but from what I saw it was a great airplane /motor combo !!

Hi Guys,
We I just went and barrowed a Rossi from a fellow club member and did some measuring. Looks like if I rotate the engine 90 degrees, the Rossi rear will work perfect. Best part is I was just told there is a new Rossi 61 3+2 on fleabay. Thank David Hill for the heads up.

Jorge

Jorge,

Check this out: http://www.rcuniverse.com/forum/fb.asp?m=11181833. A RE in a Dirty Birdy can be done.

Hey Jorge...so did Joe Bridi "think alike...a RE in a DB"....and he built it and named it the "XLT". And the good news is....you can get the kit for the XLT.

Waaay back in the '70's I flew Pattern with the Vertigo II powered by a piped Rossi "Blackhead" (60 or 61). I ran it on 3 to 5 percent nitro and 15 percent oil (5 percent castor and 10 percent synthetic) We clocked my plane at 136mph on highway patrol radar. I ran over 100 gallons of fuel through that engine over a period of 4 years....wore out 2 sets of Kraft-Hayes wheels. I don't know about the new Rossi engines, but the old ones were really great engines.

Hey Jorge, good luck with the Auction! The seller is one of our own NECPO members so no worries about the condition of the engine.

Hey JC, the NovaRossi engines are just as good if not better. The metallurgy that goes into these engines is TOPS!

Personally I’d say NovaRossi is way better though!!

Bud,
I'll take your word for the quality of the NovaRossi engines. They have a fine pedigree that's for sure. For the past 3 or 4 years I have been flying the Mark 1.35 which is actually a Moki engine under a different name. I really like the engine and the way it performs...and it runs fine on FAI fuel. The only problem is these engines are not imported by a major distributor and so parts and service are hard to find. What about parts and service for the NovaRossi?

Why not run a Jett 76 Rear exhaust engine with a 12x12 prop. Speed, power and quite also. This engine is very light also. If I every get a DB of P-7 then it will be this engine.

Sorry speed racer but if going to go to a full size 60 that heavy I would just get a rear exhaust 90-105 heli motor and then would have the fastest DB around.

Hey JC, no problem as far as parts support!

Allan at Planet Hobby has us covered Bud!

I even have engines that he doesn’t stock that he supplies product support for.

If it's NOVAROSSI he can take care of us.

Hey airraptor,  I have some JETT 90’s no 76’s though! Another great choice for power plants but a little expensive for many.

“HELI ENGINES” looked at them also, just too much $$$ for a DB ARF! And the results would be marginal; we are flying PATTERNSHIPS not rockets!

You still need to fly the pattern, 1500/15550 rpm is plenty fast with an APC 11/7 prop for Ballistic Pattern.

Paul, is the 15500rpm on APC 11x7 the numbers that you get from the NovaRossi R61F with pipe after break in?

Can you elaborate how you compare the RovaRossi .60s to the traditional Rossi (or the now Axe Rossi)?

Not trying to start brand war between the Rossi brothers, just trying to understand differences... especially in power and carb metering from someone who recently operated both. Thanks!

Hi Jorge, Paul and others,
You were asking about the Nova Rossi vs "the old school Rossi 61 3+2" you mentioned. Power is similar but the older Rossi had a much harder chrome on the liner and will out last the Nova Rossi at least two to one. Now you may ask how do I know this. I used to build U/C speed engines and competition free flight engines for over 40 years, and last played with the Nova Rossi 21's. Great workmanship and parts support, no doubt , BUT just not as good as the older Rossi engines. BTW other than bearings, what parts would you need unless you stuff the engine in the ground.

Larry

Pitstop sorry to say this but the Jett 90 isnt very strong at all. The Jett 76 is a 45 size engine case. It is set up for low rpm power and torque. I would compair the Jett 76 as = to the Hanno 61 MarkII but with 5-6 ounces less weight. this eneing with a 12-10 -12x12 prop will out perform the smaller props at higher rpm.

The older Rossi engines were heavy, but with that weight come an engine that in its day was built to last and one of the strongest. One other great engine for the DB is the OS 65 AX on a Jett "red" muffler. I think it turns a 11x7 at 15,000 and a 11x8 at 14,000

Airraptor, I was saying the Jett 90’s are another good choice not the 76’.

The 90 will turn an APC 11/7 over 16,000 with short pipe setup.

I agree about the DB and the OS 65AX another good combo, mine turns a 11/7 APC at right around 15,000 with short pipe setup.

The truth is that there are many good setups out there for running high RPM's.
