33% Edge with a 3W-80 on the nose. This thing kicks like a mule when trying to crank it. I bought it second hand with only about a gallon of fuel thru it. I have severely bruised two of my fingers not once but twice, using a welders glove ! I can see that the timing has been tinkered with along the way. So being that it kicks so bad, I moved it some myself. To much and I lost the top end RPM's. I got desperate today and "kick started" it.....even kick me back ! Anyone else have this with the big single cylinders ? [>:]

From my experience three things can contribute to this. Timing being too far advanced, getting it too wet and running low octane. I havent owned any 3W singles but the 70 and 170 twins that I have owned ran really well on 91 octane with factory set timing.

Sounds like the static timing is set to far in advance. Thus it still is advanced too much for starting. What is your static timing set to at this time?

i had that same problem with my 3w80.... i swapped out the 3w ign for an rc xcell...i eyeballed the stock location of the hall sensor and did my best to put the rcxcell in the same spot....when it came time to start it, it gave me a good whack when it back fired.....it left my index finger tip numb for a couple of months.... luckily it was a blunt Belia prop and not a thin bladed prop.... i checked the timing and it was at about 35 deg....so i brought it down to 27 and problem solved.... another thing to take into consideration is to follow through solidly when hand starting it...

Here what I found this morning. The timing WAS high. I set the piston at TDC, set my pointer to 0, Reset the pickup to 28 degrees. Funny that setting is as low as can be set. This engine is fitted with an ignition that was made for CH by Recell. It is Version 2, model A: 01 L. Does this thing have auto advance ?

You want to make sure that the spark plug fires at 28 degrees BTDC. Dan.

RCexl has auto-RETARD of ~21° during starting and low rpm operation. It restores gradually back to your set timing between 2000 and 4000 rpm
BTW, high performance engines like lower advance, like 23 - 26° BTDC. Try it.
