Could you link to were you found the picture, the engine is a small ignition(probably .19/.29 by the size of the plug)from the 40's. Most likely meant to run on ice or snow and not r/c, might have been free running or for tether which was popular back then.

I wish I could remember where I got the picture from. I started to design my own today because I figured it was homemade. Its worth a try to see how well it works.

I found another pic and a brief description. It is a tether boat/racer whatever you want to call it. My design is going to use skis instead of rails and going to be bigger. I am also going to make it r/c .

Looking at the second picture with plan in the backgroud, it might have been a kit from that period. Tether running was very big after WWII in the US (boats and cars) and is still done today with speed over 200 Mph for cars and a bit less for boats!

If you are using skis, children skis work well, are lite and are inexpensive at Goodwill…. I built this 10 years ago….

Hey John that thing is cool. How does it do on the snow? What size engine do you have in it?

Also I have never seen anything like those military vehicles you posted Altered.

Thank You.. I just added a new prop (11x5) and the engine is only a .455. It had a smaller 3 bladed prop and was clocked at 45mph on snow covered ice. I just fixed the skis as I was a little anxious to get it running again, so I took it outback in the gravel lot. It had no problems with the newer prop gliding over the gravel and going up hill in the grass. But once I started doing 360’s they let go.. Oh Well! So I will have to see how fast it will go with the new prop…

Ok I spent 2 Saturdays drawing up some plans for the snow skier. I dont have any fancy CAD machine or anything so I drew it up on paper with a pencil. I got it far enough to start building. Everything on the plan didnt work out perfect but modifying it as I go.

Hey John didnt think anyone was interested in this so I havnt added anymore pics. The skis im using are for rc airplanes and im hoping they wil do the trick. Im sure I will have to make alot of changes since I have no clue what im doing . We did have 10 inches of snow but it all melted the last 2 days. Hopefully I can get it done for the next round of snow.

Very Nice! Are you getting this in the air or keeping it on the snow/ice?

Oh no its not going to be in the air. I know it looks like an airplane fuse but no wing or horizontal stab.

Good Find!

Normal 0 false false false ontGrowAutofit/> MicrosoftInternetExplorer4 It looks awesome, and such a slick design, butafter tweaking my Zombie for some years now, the probability of disaster withthe “Power Ice Boat Design” is why they fizzled out?  Engine placement (your on the ground, not inthe air), ski size (good luck finding a perfect sheet of ice, you will havesnow and cracks to navigate over), length and width of skies (provide stabilityfrom engine torque and bumps), center of gravity (provides additionalstability), weight (you don’t wont it too light, unless you have reverse, stopping will be an issue) and liftoff (mounting the engine with a slightdownward pitch) are all issues I had to address. I am no expert, thus the name “Zombie”….

I agree John, there is alot of stuff I wont know til I try it out. I have the back ski on a different channel than the rudder since I dont know how much the ski will actually steer it. If it ends up steering it good I will set both on the same channel. I am guessing I want most of the cg towards the back to keep from nosing over and helpwith the steering. Also my legs are set up high for snow clearance because it probably wont be on ice, just snow. If it ends up being too top heavy I have extra room to lower it thru the legs. The skis themselves are rated for a 10 lb airplane and I think this will come in at about 6 lbs.

All the snow has melted in the last few days so I am going to try to get it done before the next snow storm. Hopefully everything will work out and I wont have to do very much modifying to it but I doubt that will be the case.

All the snow is gone here as well. And the ice is fairly rotten. Good luck with your build, I look forward to seeing more pics and a video of your snow/ice plane.
