After owning the fifth scale CARF Hawk (originally scaled down from the Skygate) for a few years I always said the only way it could be better would be to have a bigger one. With all the work involved on the Boomerang side I would never have had time to build the Skygate kit version so how cool is it that CARF have finally got the ARF version available ! Of course it would be sensible as Boomerang sell CARF models to have one to try

My Hawk arrived recently and I haven't had a chance to look at it properly but today I finally had a chance to hang the kit together and boy am I impressed ! Fantastic fit and finish, all the original detail of the Skygate model and very ARF. Nose gear doors are hinged and fitted, main gear doors same thing but not fitted for ease of transport. Everything hinged (scale), control horns in the surfaces. CARF have also taken to blending the seams on the fuselage which is great. Everything looks to be usual CARF style, superbly engineered, very strong and very light. I have weighed everything going in the model and I see no reason why this shouldn't be an under 20kg dry / 25kg wet model with a 180 size turbine. Legend has it that these babies fly better with a bit of weight in them but the great thing is you can have the choice to add weight if you want whereas taking it out isn't quite so easy.

Im hoping to get on to the assembly over the next few weeks but from what I have seen so far it shouldn't take too long. Here are some pics for starters..

Will do Andy - you can fly the Hawk if I can fly the Viper . Good to see it has flown.

The seam lines have been sanded and colour match sprayed over outside of the mould. You can still see them but as there is so much detail on the model in terms of rivets, panel lines and hatches etc you just don't notice them. Once the model is dirtied up with some weathering I don't see it being a problem.

As the first one shipped my one wasn't done but the nose will have the matt black anti glare painted on. This is done outside of the mould so that gets rid of that seam line so the only one left partially visible from the top is from the back of the cockpit to the fin and thats the one CARF have attended to.

I have ordered touch up paints for all the colours from CARF as if there is anything that needs a touch up I have the matched colours on hand.

I can't wait to start assembling !!!

regards

Colin

Mike , the wingspan is 2510mm and length 3000mm so slightly large than 1/4 scale

Vertical and horizontal stabs both remove very easily for transport and, should you wish to have it the front half of the fus is also removable.

regards

Colin

Managed to finally get some time to start screwing this together. Of course I had to start with a bit of bling so painted up the undercarriage ! I haven't installed the main leg covers yet so they are still white but you get the idea...

Moved on to the flaps and ailerons next. I could try and make this sound complicated but it was just a case of screw the servos in and make up linkages. The biggest decision was choosing the length of arms for the throws I wanted.

Ive decided to go with super smooth JR8711 all round.

Have been playing with the install this evening. Decided to put the fuel pump, ECU and bubble trap on top of the tank which in turn is velcro strapped to its seat like the smaller Hawk and Tutor. I've done this for easy access to the turbine behind. The whole fuel system and ECU can be taken out with the tank just by releasing the tank straps.

The air and PowerBox system is on the forward tray but still mounted to the rear fus formers so the fus can be split easily if necessary - this is a big aircraft !

Looks great Colin
Congratulations

I just think it is a pitty to have a bird like this, painted in the mould..... it really deserves an external paint.

Merry Christmas

Nuno

Thanks Anurag. How is your SG Hawk going ?

The board I have used for the trays is a compressed epoxy board (G10) available in different thicknesses for all sorts of little jobs.

I have now unpacked mine fully, I have been working on the gears, taking apart and cleaning, and spraying, I have now started on the airframe, I can only agree with Colin , it is just a bolt for bolt construction, as per the CARF Viper, the build the finish the whole package is the best I have seen. Quality like I have never seen before, this is a product all others will need to look at , some folk will say expensive but the amount of work put in by CARF makes up for the price. Fantastic........mine is also in the Swiss scheme and this is also to be seen to be believed. Clean paint work good detail, nice clean lines , inc are all good quality fittings , the flaps, ailerons tail plane fin, all hindges done all horns installed , WOW well done CARF.
