For years i have always built on a sheet of 5/8 sheetrock. I tape down the plans, then I put clear packing tape over all of the areas to be built over so that after building a certain part, i just take a thin piece of metal, such as a hack saw blade and slide it side to side under the part and it very easily pops off of the plans with no damage to either the part or the plans. The only drawback is at the end, every where that i put a t-pin is now glued down to the dry wall. After all that time of protecting the plans, i end up doing more damage just trying to roll them up. Aside from a magnetic building board, ( which i would love to have)but dont have, what do you guys do to prevent this from happening?Im tired of shredding up plans. I would love to hear what you guys do. Thanks, Steve.

I have a solid core door for the base. I put a piece of cellotex on top of that and then I lay my plans on top of the tex. I cover the plans with parchment paper and then build on that. The parchment paper will not let any thing stick to the paper or the plans.

I made a bench from scratch called a torsion box. A lot of work but was dead flat and won't warp. It's tedious but you only have to build it once. Just look this up on YouTube -

But more importantly, when I build from plans, I make a copy first and build off of the copy. The cost was $5-$10 or so, a small price to pay considering how much money you're going to put into this airplane anyway.

Just my $.02

I also make a copy so I can keep the original. I do a lot of scratch building. I guess I enjoy building as much as flying.

My board is just 3/4 inch pine I have laminated then run through a sander to get it level then put cross braces on the bottom to keep it level. I used to always have a second copy of my plans made but it depends on the plane and if I need to worry about destroying the originals. Unless I cut up the plans I don't seem to hurt them just building over them. The pine board allows me to use Tee Pins during my builds. I have never tried a magnetic board but I have been told it's really a great way to go.

I used to teach building classes at the LHS & heres what we did for each student. Picture #1 is a piece of shelf board that is laminated on all sides, bought at Lowes under $10. Pic #2, we attached a piece of 1/2" drywall material & taped down 3 sides. Pic#3, next we ran a straight edge from corner to corner to check for flatness & shimmed it up if needed with paper under the drywall. Pic#4, tape down the plans & cover with waxpaper. Pic #5, start building. This way we could put all the building tables away until the next building session, or they could take them home & work on stuff themselves. This is just one way thats easy & inexpensive & builds a Flat & straight model.......Gene

Ceiling tile (24 inch by 48 inch if I remember right) placed upside down on your workbench and covered with plans and wax paper works good. Never had a problem with the T pins sticking to the plans.

I have a torsion-box, which I fitted with blind nuts, so that I can clamp components.

But, my friend uses a pine desk. Instead of modelling pins, he secures components using 2" nails (obviously he doesn't nail through itty bits of balsa). This works really well ... much better than pins. It's worth considering.

First of all, thanks to all who have taken the time to share ideas with me. They all sound good. The real problem is the back side of the plans sticking to the drywall where the t pins penatrate. The CA follows the pin down into the drywall. I think for now, I will just have coppies mades so that its n ot a big deal if it happens. In the near future i would really like to try the magnetic system. Can any one tell me where to get the materfials? The metal i dont see as a problem to find, but how about the magnets? Are they expensive? And how do you go about holding down say a wing panel, or the fuse? Do you have to cut notches in them to fit over the spars?I am realizing that with as many planes that i have building, and with as many as i would like to build, the cost is nothing in the long run. Just wondering. Thanks again for all of the knowledge. Steve.

Where do you get the copy made ? Just Kinko's or Staples? Or do you need to look for somewhere with a special capability for these large sheets? Thanks for the info.

Kinko's, but it's worth a phone call to other copy centers. I used to have to wait until I was going to make a trip from the mountains down to Fresno {almost 2 hours} to get my plans copied. I also located an old print shop that still had a blue line machine in operation that I liked even better. There are print shops that have the machine like Kinko's that copy blue prints for architects too.
I almost never have my plans get stuck to the board? I don't glue over the pins or pin holes. If a little glue does get through I just use a flat metal ruler and gently scrape the plan off the board from under them. You can press down some clear tape over the top of the stuck area so the plans stick to the tape more then the board when you lift them.
Kit plans I never get copied these days and Building plans I only get a copy if I'm going to cut them up as templates.
Just be careful with the glue, use wax paper or parchment paper over them. Parchment works great but you can see through wax paper better, I use them both.

Thanks grey beard for the replys. I did just call staples and for a 3 foot by 4 1/2 foot plan it's only 5 dollars so economically I think it's the way to go. I was just thinking too that if I put packing tape on the bottom of the plan or even on the drywall it self would probably solve the problem. I'll give it a try. Thanks again.   Steve.

Thanks for reporting on the Staples call, Steve, and for confirmation on Kinko's, Gray Beard. I have new plans that will be on the board soon and I'd like to cut a set up for templates, so this is great information.

I wish I had a suggestion for your original question. I build on a ceiling tile, laying the plans directly on top and then covering them with wax paper. Like Gray Beard, I don't normally glue in or through the pin holes so no glue gets under the wax paper. Your idea of covering the drywall first, then laying the plan on top sounds like a reasonable approach. Good luck.

There is a recent build thread under "Kit Building" that RCU member "acer" shows his building table that uses magnets.
And he shares were to get the magnets.

Ej Lind used to make a magnetic building board set. Tower hobbies/great planes bougt it up from his widow after he died. It used to run about 120. Haven't seen it in a while but i think it is still inproduction. The magnets have holes in them and you can bolt accessories to ithem. The board itself was about four feet by one and a half feet so about a good glow 120 wing panel was maxed out. It needed a solid flat surface to be layed out. I built a lot of planes on mine, but really liked the magnets when I scored a nice steel exterior door to build on.

I use a door with a piece of drywall on top it. I cover the plans with the clear backing from a used roll of monokote. But since I mainly use Ultracote now, I'll have to find something else in the future. I also have my plans copied at Staples before I start a build.

O.K I'm surprised no one said this yet so I will. Go to your local glass shop and see if they have any used panels from a patio door or tempered glass table tops. Check on craigs list also. you lay your plans on the bench and then cover over with the glass. To hold spars or other items in place you just use a spot of CA and when your ready take a razor blade and pop it all loose from the glass. Dave Platt and many others use this method.  No holes in your plans or spilled glue.

I made,a table from a solid core Masonite door, border with 1x3 wood (I used some Oak I had laying around) a 1/2" higher than the top surface, then I cut a sheet of 1/2" homosote board the size of the door and laid it in. It made a nice building table that is flat and I can stick pins into it to hold things.

This is probably the best system I've ran across. The magnets are just cabinet door magnets.

I've used sheetrock forever.Once I started making nicer/bigger models, I used sheetrock above glass, taping down the edges, Or two pieces of plywood laid across each other and leveled with a level.

Regardless, use a very true/stiff rod to check your front and leading edges. If you have minor bends, you can try to take them out with the coating.

Upside down 2x4 cieling tiles on my "known flat workbench? Easily yet strongly accept pins.. I tape down both 2' ends chordwise with wide masking.. easy, inexpensive and flat... come 4 to a box at Lowes. One tile can last a coulple builds. Have everything from small electeics to 60 size planes.
