Hi there, I am new in the RC world, as I have just received my first Helicopter yesterday. It is a "Protocol Tough-copter", I understand it is a cheap one but for the beginning is good enough for me, as it gives me the opportunity to learn the basics without crash an expensive toy.

The main problem I want to solve is the battery life, which gives me about 10 minutes fly after a 2 hours charging time. The battery is placed inside the helicopter, but I am planning to modify the wires so to be able to attach the battery from outside the body. After I will have made this modify I will be able to change the battery in just a minute, and therefore if I buy more battery I will be able to operate for long time. I still don't know exactly what kind of battery is in it, but from what I see it seems this one: http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Aircraft-Battery-Airplane-Toy-20C-Pack-500MAH-3-7V-New-/251028239327?pt=UK_ToysGames_RadioControlled_JN&hash=item3a7272f3df

Therefore, I would like to ask you advices in merit:

1- is there any way to have a battery like that but with higher capacity?
2- if I buy let's say 5 batteries, is there a charger I can buy to charge all of them in the same time?

Knowing the world of forums, I am sure that hundreds of people may have already asked you the same questions, and it is not my intention to bother you with this, but as I usually give advices on my expertise field (the audio-visual) this time I need to be helped, as I really don't know anything about all of this.

Many thanks for your attention.

As long as it will fit you should be able to fit a higher capacity battery in. That is a 1s (one cell) lipo (lithium polymer) battery. You will have to cange your battery connectors to a common one to easily upgrade your batteries, but be careful as lipos can blow up if shorted. You can find a battery that can be charged very fast, instead of 2 hours it charges in probably 20min here: http://www.hobbyking.com/hobbyking/store/__20385__Turnigy_nano_tech_600mah_1S_35_70C_Lipo_Pack_Fits_Nine_Eagles_Solo_Pro_328_Eflite_MQX_120SR_.html , I don't know if it will fit though. Here is a quad charger that you can get or make expansion leads to to charge batteries in parallel, so more can charge at once: http://www.hobbyking.com/hobbyking/store/__15986__HobbyKing_4B6_Balance_Charger_Plus_Accessories_200W_.html , but you probably will not want something that big, so this is an OK starter: http://www.hobbyking.com/hobbyking/store/__7028__Turnigy_Accucel_6_50W_6A_Balancer_Charger_w_accessories.html
If you get some of this stuff make sure you have a power supply, the correct charge leads and connectors.

Thanks a lot for your precious suggestions. I will certainly buy at least 6 of those batteries, and concerning the charger I think I will go with the Turnigy Accucel-6. But how many batteries can I charg at the same time with that?

I have made a video to show you the helicopter, please consider this is the first time ever I fly... when I will be good with this I will certainly upgrade to a most powerfull one, but for now this is good enough for me. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OlLlnFkRLMo

Once more thank you for your help and for your patience.

All the best.

Make sure the batteries will fit. If you also get a parallel charging board you might be able to charge up to 6 batteries at once. On the computer charger you set the chrge voltage to 1s 3.7v and the charge rate to however many amps the battery is and NO HIGHER. For a 600mah battery set the charger to .6A. If the battery says, for example, max charge rate 5c you can set the charger anywhere from .6A to 5 X .6A (3A). Let me know if you need anymore help.

Thanks a lot once more. I am sorry but I really have no knowledge about all of this electronic stuff. What "parallel charging board" can you suggest me? I am sure the batery you suggested has the same connection of the actual battery, but I am not sure it will fit in it. Because the battery is inside the body, and have to be removed by unscrewing three litle screws I was thinking to atach the battery outside, above the body of the helicopter, or to find three screws really easy to remove without screwdriver, so the proces to remove the plasitc protection is faster. I am really grateful for the time you are dedicating to me rem0.061. Please let me know what do you think.

I had a look at your video to see what kind of helicopter we are talking about. I see that it is a cheaper one that is'nt as easily compatable with other parts. I don't know your skill with working on helis and electronics, but here is what would need to be done. The battery in the helicopter will need to come out, then the connector in the heli will need to be changed to a female JST connector. The old battery will need a male JST connector, so you can still use it. When changing the wires and plugs on batteries, always cut, rewire, and insulate ONE WIRE AT A TIME to reduce the risk of a dangerous sort circuit. Then, have the heli power wires (to the battery) jead out of the inside of the heli to the bottom. Then attach small velcro to the bottom of the heli, and to the batteries for easy mounting. You can get the new wires here: http://www.hobbyking.com/hobbyking/store/__9683__Female_JST_battery_pigtail_12cm_length_10pcs_bag_.html and here http://www.hobbyking.com/hobbyking/store/__9682__Male_JST_battery_pigtail_10cm_length_10pcs_bag_.html . As for the parallel charging board you will need more female JST plugs, and the board can be found here: http://www.hobbyking.com/hobbyking/store/__28274__Parallel_Charging_Board_for_6_packs_2_6S_Bare_Leads_.html . To wire something in parallel means to connect the positive to positive and negative to negative, so the output current is the sum of the input current. The parallel board does it for you. For example: two 500mah 3.7v batteries wired in parallel will have a 1A 3.7v output, and two 500mah 3.7v batteries wired in series will have a .5A 7.4v output.

This is great... it's a shame I can't take a picture of the parts as my girfriend already packed it for Christmas... but... when I opened the helicopter I clearly saw that the battery has a male JST connector which is connected to a female JST connector... the lenght of the femal connector is long enough to make me able to place it out from the helicopter, on this way  I can do exactly what you said, applying the new batteries with velcro on the bottom of the helicopter. concerning the parallel board, I can do the re-wire job but I will certanly ask you hlep on the first charge, before I charge them, so at least I am sure  I am doing everything fine. This will be in January as I will be probably waiting for the items to be delivered to me. rem0.o61 I know this seems a lot for a cheap heli, but it is only the beginning, I want to do the things right and upgrade to best RC when I will be prepared. Once more I thank you for the time and the patience you are dedicating to me, which I vastly appreciate. Have you got a Youtube Channel or a web site so I can follow you? My Youtube channel is AvantgardePicturesMG thanks to you I will make a video of each step of my learning progress and upload them there. Speak later. Jack

Just reply here in January and my subscription should let me know when you say something. My channel is MegaNutBall, I rarely post videos, or watch them, due to my slow internet, but I will post a video of how to charge a battery. My charger is different than the one you are getting, but the programming is very similar.

on the manual when you bought the heli it should tell you the voltage of the built in battery just say 3.5v so you make the battery outside the same voltage.
