Ace,

Earlier when you had said you were using a templat and router to cut your ribs. I knew exactly what you meant (i am a cabinet maker).
Although, I had not thought of using the big guns on balsa. It makes perfect sense.
I will be making a little router table for my next airplane (scratch built with plan's).

I had invisioned gluing paper on all ribs, cutting close, and then sanding all to that fat line, one by one. (not so precise).

Thank you for your tutorials on how you build. Soaking it up !

Kevin

Glad to have been of some help Kevin.
I have been most the day cutting up the pieces for the wings, LE, TE, spars, ply ribs(for the center-but joint), servo trays, etc. The only thing I have actually put together was laminating the wing strut mounts. I think I have most everything cut. So as soon as the strut mounts dry I can start glueing it together.

Well the part in that last post where I said "most" is where I was at when my band saw blade broke. Last piece too, the trailing edge.
So I run to Ace and I'm 4 minutes late, they are closed. Humbug!!!

Not a real productive day model wise. But I think the left half is ready for some glue. I will get on that in the morning.
By the way, the trailing edge seen in this pic was hand cut cut with a zona blade. Man I miss my band saw!

20yrs ago i worked for a local kit manufacturer and my job was cowls, epoxy glass undercarrage, veneering the foam wings and the dreaded fusalage sides which had to be done using a router ! i'm not sure what it was Robert, maybe the blade was blunt, entering at wrong angle or simply too much left on the blanks, but it would 'grab' and catapult what you were holding to the other end of the workshop so ever since then i have been teriffied to go anywhere near a router !

I have managed to get round my 'fear' by using the disc sander.

Looking good
Did you get more than one copy of the plans for your templates or just scan the parts from the plans .

I just scan the plans on a standard home scanner. You just have to take a measurement on the first copy of anything to make sure the scanner is sized right.

JJ two issues with routers and balsa. One is balsa is to soft so I cut it with the band saw to withing a 1/4" of the template, this is so the balsa does not wrap around the router bit.  Second is the direction of feed, generally one feeds the wood in the same direction as the bit's rotation. Once again the balsa is to soft and the bit's will grab hold and, you know. Go against the rotation and its smooth as silk.

I think your right Robert, we as modelers seem to be able to adapt to what we have available without much problem (fortunatly)

I just got home from a day of flying and am rather disheartened. A fellow club member has a Cub he just painted the wing's, tailfeathers, and a big stripe down the side, black. I flew it and did not even leave the ground ground before realizing I have a major issue with seeing black. Flew two circles by way of the wheels hanging down because all I could see was a big black dot. So the black is out for the Pitts. I have no idea what color scheme I will go with.
I did pick up a new band saw blade.

Sorry to hear that ace, Last summer I realized not all colors show well in the air, the sun has to hit it just right. For what it's worth, l know for a fact that my pitts challenger was the easiest plane to see I ever had.

Sorry for your inability to see black well.

Can you see red.
Hot Rod Red always looks cool on a stunt plane.

I am doing my Kadet in translucent red and bright white.

Amen Kevin!  The reason for the season!  That's also my favorite song from Handle's Messiah.

Hey Robert, remember when you asked my opinion?  Go for the Ford color scheme, come on, go for it!

All colors tend to go black the farther we fly out. Black starts out the worse. Years ago someone painted their pattern plane black and the pilot and the judges could not see it to do well. My Jungmiester is yellow with markings identical on top and bottom. I have to concentrate the whole flight; upside down looks the same as upright.

Ah, that is a set back Robert. that was without a doubt the main reason i went with the dark yellow. My favorite colour for the pitts is the marion cole colours, but even they are not great for the sky's we get here on the west coast of scotland for 90% of the year.

I primed this plane in ligjt gray then painted with brite red. It came out kind of a satin finish. No shine to it made it very visiable. I notice the mirror finish reflects the sun disturbing my view. The sun at my back is a big help also.

Thank's for the support guy's. I think I am going with a bit of a controversial scheme. Maybe even paint a cigarette on the lowewr rear fuse and rig a smoke system to come out at the end of it.

Hey Robert that used to be my brand of choice. I think I paid enough to Marlboro over the years to buy 3 Pitts.

Bummer about the black, I know what you mean about a plane being hard to see. I had a black Sporster-Bipe and it was hard to orient due to the color.
Later!!
Anthony

Hey Robert,

Cub Flyer is right on the mark....go for that Ford scheme...

And if you need additional pics of it...here's the site where you can see more:

https://picasaweb.google.com/TCPRCphotos/TrevorBrumSGIANTScalePitts#

This scheme is impossible not to see to say the least

Thank's Hinckley but I really want to build a Top Gun contender. Not that I would compete, just want to see how close I can get to what I see there every year.
