Basically the plans give the size and dimensions, not the angle of attachment. I built over that point of the plans without taking into account the front legs angle. And believe it or not I did not see this untill this morning when answering straitnickel's question. Kinda like the exspression "Can't see the forest for the tree's.". That's why I like these forum's, often when blinded by the forest, a simple conversation help's me see the tree's.
   Thank's!

Robert, sometimes a fresh pair of eyes is all it takes. I've lost count the amount of times i've been un-sure, and after coming back to it from a short break spotted the solution straight away.

Robert, would this help - making the wire part of the underacrrage so that it bolts on just in front of the leading edge of the bottom wing (and the front obviously) but extend it to the scale shape using ply and balsa to the exact profile of the bottom wing. When mounting the bottom wing, you would just slide it under the back of the undercarrage.

John that would be a much easier position in relation to the wing install. But not a scale position, and scale is what I am shooting for. I have no problem with the gear being over the wing now that I have set it up as removeable. Four screws and the gear will come out giving access for the wing removal. And as it stands there are no changes to the plans or scale positioning. My problem at the onset was the idea of the gear pivoting at the front with it being butted up against the firewall. Which is also where the cowl terminate's, so the firewall and the cowl would have had to have a slot for the gear to rotate in. Neither is needed with just removing the gear. Plus I know me and having the gear still in the fuse, attached at the front, I would have caught them on something and broke something. This way the gear won't even be in the fuse. And as we all know gear tend to need repairs sooner or later and being removeable makes repairing them much easier as well.
At least this is my thinking, I may be proven wrong.

Yeah, i understand what you mean. l'll need to have a look at all these pictures of the full size on-line. Toni clark say's his pitts is 100% scale even down to construction and mounting of the top wing and struts, but i have no idea how close it is, at the time i just wanted a nice flying large scale pitts that had reasnable proportions.

I've been thinking lately though of building another and going as scale as i can and maybe entering a few local comps. I did this in the late 80's with stand-off scale and really enjoyed it.

I've been working on this for the last week or so Robert. Super cute, but handle's like a dog ! I've managed to shave nearly 1lb in weight so hopefully it'll be a little better.

Holy cow, 1lb on that little thing, at least it looks little in the pics. Whats the size and weight, less the 1lb? Looks good though.

I think it's 42" span Robert. It did weigh 6lb but i changed the standard 20yr old sevos to 9gram jr digitals which are more or less the same torque as the old standard sevos (jr 517's)

It's powered by an OS 48 surpass and i also moved the battery to under the cowl and managed to get most of the chunk of lead i had on it to balance. This is the second one i have built which was back in the late 90's, the first one was in 1985 and was a nightmare of a thing to fly, but i sorted most of that in the second one.

Sound's like a keeper John. I would not mind having one to fly before this one. Oh well.
I have rebuilt the gear wire's and I believe it is near perfect now. I also added the center piece. The spring is next so I can be done with the wire.

Your back on track now Ace,
it took very little time, that must have been easier to fix than I thought. It's looking good now. I didn't consider damage and repair of the gear when you first mentioned making them removable, that going to pay off in the long run.

Straitnickel once again brings up a good point. The point that I have been refering to as a firewall is actually a bulkhead. In the photo I have circle in red what/where the firewall would typically be. I guess with it being such a small mount I have been refering to the bulkhead (A) as the firewall, which is circled in yellow. And it is quite possible I just do not know/ remember the proper terms for all these point's. Either way the gear are positioned in a scale location and angle.
Wayne those are some nice photo's, where are they from?

Never mind Wayne. After a second look I recognize the green striped one and then noticed the Airliner's name. I should buy stock in that site as much as I use it.

I thought I would chime in here after reading most of this thread. I have built more Pitts than I can count over the years. I still have the original plans I ve used for, I don't really remember how long. To me these are still the most beautiful stunt, aerobatic, what ever adj you want to call out. The bird lends itself well to almost any color scheme. Looks fantastic in air rolling or zooming across the sky. It will always be my favorite airbatic even over the monoplanes. Yes really. My first one used a Fox Twin which was more power than needed but you could go vertical an it seemed for ever. This is a great build I only wish I could be there to see it airborne. I currently will be working on another as soon as my new scroll saw arrives.

Without a small rebuild of moving the forward wing mount to the wing spar and removing the leading edge so the fuse could be extended to mount the gear permanently, I would mount the gear to the wing and have the forward part of the gear lock in place when you mount the wing. Something like slip in a grove.

TFF,
You saying put a knotch in the front of the wing to make room for the fuse and gear?

Thats the way mine is, basicly the main spar butts hard against the former that the wing dowls go into. If you look at the bottom wing straight on, the sides are angled to contour of the fusalage sides.

Robert, again, if theres any pictures of the TC pitts you think may help just say the word, i'd be happy to help. I know your looking for true scale and i believe toni's is. I'm pretty sure i read that one of his pitts won a world championship (F4C) back in the 70's

Robert, i do apologise i forgot you wanted to make the gear removable to make life easier later on in case of accidents.

Don't worry about it JJ. I have to go back through the thread to get a reminder of things I said as well.
The gear are done. In the pic you can see where the rear of the gear will slide into a slot and the front is hard mounted. Doing the gear this way accomplishes two thing's. One, they are removeable and two, if there is any give it will not break the wing. But simply slide rearward. I also posted a pic of the rudder and elevator servo mount.
One must take into account that I use 55% silver brazing wire and when setting the gear up it get's tied together with brass wire. I think it would have to be a real, real, real bad landing to have any effect on the gear.
