WLToys V911 review   (Solo Pro/Trex 100/FP100/GT3484 Arrow  clone)
Wltoys-V911 4 Channel 2.4GHz Single-Blade RC Helicopter

The kitset was received a few days after a PM requesting a review be completed and published on this forum.
A Mode 1 unit was requested. Unfortunately the package received contained a Mode 2, which after 50 years of
flying Mode 1 made flying an interesting experience. After several batteries practice, was pleasantly surprised
at how stable this model was compared to even two blade micro heli flown previously.

Hits:
. Packaging, well laid out for shipping long distance.
. Appearance. Good eye appeal and active marketing.
. Affordable
. Gyro.

Misses:
1. Legality of use in various countries.
. There is no evidence of FCC or other similar type approval.
This may not be required as range is quoted to be a short 25m<35m.
. Unit is advertised as  "WLtoys V911 2.4GHz 4CH Gyro Remote Control RC Helicopter"
yet under specifications on some web pages and on Customs Shipping Document received, as
"Mini V911 4Channel Infrared Remote Control Helicop."

2. Quality:
. Unit received had an incorrectly assembled battery holder which should have been easily
seen before unit packed. Not an easy observation/fix for the uninitiated and if battery forced in would lead
to very short life span of battery and probably model. After pushing plate back into place, batteries were still very hard to insert.
NB: This is the original battery connector which was changed some months ago and coment will not apply to those who receive more recent productions.
Be alert when ordering spare batteries to request the new or old type, see photo.
. Instruction manual page 5 refers to button top left as "Rudder conversion Changing button" and page 8 as "Mode Button",
Button is in fact what is commony termed a "Dual Rate" switch activating an of/off 50% rate setting on all Aileron, Elevator & Rudder,
nothing to do with Transmitter Control mode. [Push the Dual Rate button (switch) and observe deflection of aileron, rudder & elevator on Tx screen icons.
Movement will be either 50% or full - there is no other way of knowing if on 50% or full rates and accidents may happen by
not realising button accidentally pressed, not disclosed in manual].
. Aileron required over 60% right trim and rudder was not easy at first - especially as flying in an unacustomed mode with
resultant mix up use of throttle and elevator made for interesting intial flights.

3. Mode:
. Mode can not be changed by user, ensure correct mode is ordered and received.
Transmitter does display "Mode 1" icon top left of screen, this can not be changed and has no apparent function
- Tx is definitely mode 2 by way of throttle position and model reactions.

Maintenance:
. Apart from simple blade swaps little maintenance is required apart from a small drop of light oil on the shaft
and a little servo grease on the drive pinion and main gear - increases speed and battery life..
There are a number of good threads relating to repairs/upgrades on net and as below under FAQ.

Battery and Flight Time:
. Small battery (120mah) restricts flying time, especially as one gets more experienced.
This can be overcome by changing battery holder to the latest version with new battery fitting
and buying the higher capacity batteries then available. Refer also V911 Battery Upgrade Adapter
 "Caution (- not In Manual):
"Connect the Charger to a USB port First, then plug in the battery(ies).
If you plug battery in first, the charger may be damaged."

Flying:
Found to be first single blade micro model that could be easily flown indoor and outdoor (in still to light wind), despite being, for me, in the wrong mode.
Experienced pilots can fly in upto force 4 winds = 25kph (15mph).
The canopy must be on. Do not try to fly without the canopy which effects both balance and airflow.
. Mechanical Adjustment of Servo Linkages for Stable Hover
Due to inability to film and fly at same time, please refer to video of indoor and outdoor flying:
. New WLtoys V911 2.4GHz 4 Channel Gyro Remote Control RC Helicopter

Updates:
There are currently three versions of V911, this under review is V2,
An extensive review of the latest V911 (3rd revision with the new battery pack, holder & skid set) is at
WL Toys New Model V911 Review

The batteries, landing skids and charger boxes are different whilst other accessories of V2 & V3 are the same.
.. Check part numbers when requesting spare parts, especially batteries..
