Status: offline 		wood is fine for the age of the kit, all formers and ribs were there still in the sheets. Did not seem to have the strip or sheeting I would think for planking the fuelage or wing leading edge but there were sheets that were sanded to a radius that may be for the fuselage planks.

Status: offline 		I have one of the Marc's Models kits from the seventies. It's similar is size to the SIG kit but with a fiberglass fuselage.

Status: offline 		About 15 years ago, I went to an airshow at one of the small airports in the east bay of the SF Bay Area primarily to see the Gee Bee replica fly. But after the show, I was looking over a Ryan PT-22 when the owner came up and asked if I would sit in it to hold the brakes and operate the switch for the mag while he propped the Kinner radial engine. After he had it running he offered me a flight back to his home base in Livermore. I fell in love that day with that airplane.

The 5 cylinder Kinner is not a high revving engine, maybe 1700 as we started the takeoff roll, and about 2100 or 2200 in the air. But it swings a big prop just the same. The takeoff was leasurely, and after a while it just levatated. As we flew back about 1ooo feet AGL you could smell the flowers growing in the fields below, cruising along at about 100 mph. Visibility was pretty good, except for straight ahead, where the top cylinder blocked the view. So you made minor changes in direction to clear the airspace ahead. I got to fly it for much of the return flight, but I was in total sensory overload.

The planes are built like tanks, very thick sheet metal with huge round rivit heads make up the fuselage. I think they will still be Ryan ST's and PT's flying 1000 years from now, as I have never seen any airplane built stronger. They may be on their 20th pair of wood wings, but the fuselages will be original.

When you land in one of these, the strange landing gear just soaks in any drop to the runway, and it's like sitting down on a pillow. Just a non-event. But after we taxied over to his hanger and got out, we found that something had come loose in one of the valve trains and punched out a hole in a rocker arm covers. The whole side of the airplane was covered with engine oil. Fortunately we ran out of trip before we ran out of oil. From inside the cockpit, neither of us had any idea, though I guess if it had been the top jug we would have found out a lot sooner.

Eventually my buddy that had gone to the airshow with me with showed up with my Corvette. I guess we both enjoyed my luck at getting a ride, but I would bet that he would have rather flown.

It's a complete kit I've had for a few years. I was sifting through the box and put the wood aside. In fact, I have two more that are already framed up. One is covered with silk and is ready for a radio installation, the second needs covering. Although designed for glow, they will be good electric conversions.

Can I get a number?

The two partially completed were local, the kit is through Fleecebay. I think the kit was originally produced in Texas.

Yep, that is the ST-R that now lives just a few miles from me here in North Texas, per my earlier post in this thread. As I recall, it changed hands for about 80-85K....a much better deal than the 130K mentioned in the thread. Plus you get a reliable more modern powerplant.

AS I recall, he actually used the factory drawings to create the plans, not by measuring a real ST-A. (might have measured a few details, but not the entire aircraft.)

Status: offline 		I like the way the STA's look with no external longerons. I always thought that the airplane looked way overbuilt and could've withstood way more G's than it could produce!
Pretty ship in silver and orange, they were always expensive too.

I purchased a 91" wingspan Ryan STA short kit last year, and I was able to locate a 1/4 scale cowl for it. But I don't know where to find the wheel pants for this 1/4 scale airplane. Any ideas?

Status: offline 		I am from San Diego and have been involved with at least three different Ryans, the factory prints were scarce or non existant for the STA and I believe only a little better for the PT's. Ev owned an STA and developed drawings to restore it since nothing much was available. Until his drawings came out most aircraft were fixed by scrounging parts from wrecks or making new using the old part as a pattern.
