A few months back I recall seeing an add for a fiberglass pole.  This colapsed to about 4 feet and extended to 30 feet.  does anyone recall this or know where I could buy one

Tree retrieval, it sounds like. We've got over 60 feet using cheap stuff laying around, other than the duct tape. I've been looking for those poles too and had one given to me, but it's partly broken. It may be able to be incorporated into the method I use if needed. Don't laugh, this works, when you don't have a 60' utility truck or highly trained primate on hand:
Start with heavier pole sections such as broom/paint pole thickness, preferably in longer lengths. The idea is to duct tape the mass together on the ground, starting with the poles, gradually tapering to lighter rods such as dowel and fishing rods. The heavier stuff will never be able to be supported, while far in the air. You will never be able to raise the completed pole, but you will be able to feed it up the tree, with a buddy helping on the ground. The pole will flex like a giant fiberglass fishing pole, as you lift it from the light end. The idea is to get 10 feet or so up the tree with a ladder, and guide the pole along the tree, using the branches to cue the pole, like you use your fingers to cue a pool stick. With a 12 foot ladder, it's not difficult to get 16 feet up the tree or so. That really helps, as it shortens the distance between you and the plane. At 60 feet, it's pretty tricky to get a shot at the plane, but once you do it, 40 feet is an effortless walk in the park.

If the OP is indeed lookin to get a plane out of a tree , I've had success with the devise I have rigged up . It's a slingshot of the "wrist rocket" variety , with a fishing pole's reel attached to the bottom of the handgrip . A few hundred feet of high strength fishing line tied to an 11/16 nut , and with good aim a plane can be shaken out of the tree by yanking on the fishing line , provided ya get it wrapped around the right branches .

Course , if all else fails , a chainsaw WILL get ya the plane back ............
