Status: offline 		Hi Art, it's kinda cool that you'll have a third scale Eindecker again! I don't think I realized that your old one weighed in at 42 lbs. It still seemed lightly loaded on the wing. I'm subscribing and eager to see how this one comes out.

I think Tinkerbell sprinkled it with fairy dust to make it fly so lightly on the wing.
Imagine that, another Eindecker. This wing is an inch or two deeper in chord and about 19 inches greater in span than my old one, so I'm thinking this, too, will be a pretty good flyer and very light on it's wing.

That's the plan . Although somewhere along the line I wasn't told that there weren't any instructions with this kit ! and that developing the sequence and building instructions was part of my job . Gads! That sounds like W O R K and that's a four letter word!

I hope Larry doesn't take off for spelling mistakes ..... I'm sure he'll be watching

Actually, since it is all laser cut, the parts do fall into place and lock it all together, I just have to make sure that I don't leave anything out. Once we get the sequence worked out it will be pretty straight forward and relatively quick to build.

Personally, I'd advise against going the "written instructions+photos" route. Often the written instructions are incomprehensible to anyone but the builder...and of course they are useless for anyone who doesn't speak English. A much better and easier approach, which was used on MarkII of the Flair Puppeteer kit, is just to include a sheet of isometric drawings of the various construction stages. This should be no problem at all for Larry with his 3-D CAD skills. Your wing construction photo above could be easily reproduced as an isometric...and would be easier to photocopy and distribute. And with isometrics there's no language barrier.

Status: offline 		Those look great, Larry...if you don't mind printing them out in color to include with the kit (or putting them on a CDROM). In photocopier quality black and white they might be harder to read. You might consider doing simple "line drawing" versions of those. I like the idea of being able to rotate a 3-D image of the model in a pdf. One note about putting instructions only on a CDROM (or in a pdf): They are nice to look at on the computer, but printed instructions would be more helpful during the building itself.

It would also be nice if you could generate "step-by-step" versions of the isometrics. Just seeing the "final assembly" can be confusing. For example, what's the first step in assembling the wings? I would imagine it looks much like Art's photo. With both sides of an A3 sheet of paper you could probably show all of the essential steps (including perhaps only a few minimal notes along side them).

Status: offline 		Why kill any trees at all? Just post to a website. 

That way any updates are easily made and how much detail to include is not hindered by printing costs, which ESP in color (great idea that) can be prohibitive on a small profit margin product. The CDrom is OK but now you are software driven and times change, kits lie around for years before being built and now my computer can't read this old file type. You would need to keep track of any major mods and have instructions keyed to Eindecker Kit rev B etc but that's easily done.

Status: offline 		Well, after printing the computer drawings and a couple of pictures from Larry........the light bulb finally came on! Oh, so that's what those little parts are for!

I layed all the parts out on the plans and benches, studied the graphics (nearly got my little pea brain fried in the process) - oh yea, bugged Larry with a couple of phone calls - realized I was missing a couple of parts and had a couple of other parts extra .........OK! now I'm ready to build a wing.

Maybe tomorrow I can actually glue some wood!

Status: offline 		Work has actually started on the wing. Last evening was devoted entirely to establishing the building sequence and writing step by step instructions.

Believe it or not, I usually jot down building notes when I scratch build and much of the time they consist of sequenced instructions for a particular phase of the build. On a production kit, there just has to be some kind of written instructions. Even an experienced modeler needs to understand where the designer is coming from and a general approach to the build.

I laminated the two root ribs using 15 minute expoxy because CA would be too expensive and I didn't want to wait on carpenter's glue to dry. It's somewhere under all those weights on my desk.

I glued up the provided root rib angle gauge.

I joined the trailing edge together using a small a/c ply scab. Larry's laser bed is restricted to size and sometimes pieces need to be joined to get to the size required on the plans.

I also layed out the main spars, shimming them up with 1/8 balsa to account for the 1/8"balsa cap strips.

As soon as the epoxy cures and I get a bite to eat, I'll start laying in the ribs.

All ribs are in, front spars with I beam shear web is in place and also the rear spars are glued.

You can see 2 rib bays where spar material has filled the space between the upper and lower spars. Even though this is a Fun Scale type of model, if a modeler wants to add scale landing and flying wires, they would be fixed at these locations. Anytime I drill through a spar for any kind of a filtting, I always put ply shear web material on the front and back of the spars. These ply shear webs replace the strength lost by drilling into or through the spars.

I think I'm finished for tonight.........
