Hi all,

Having moved up from Coaxial to FP (Blade 120 SR) I am now starting to plan going up again to a "proper" CP job.

Initially it will be electric. I bought a Century Neon Blaze because the LHS stocks all the parts and highly recommended it. It's still in it's box for now

My question =

Right now I have a Futaba T6EXAP computerised radio but it's not classed as a "Heli" radio (whatever difference that is ?)

Plus my 10 year old AeroFly Pro SIM does not have ANY electric helicopters let alone CCPM equipped ones.

So, if I practice flying the non ccpm nitro birds on that SIM, with that t/x, am I doing myself more harm that good ?

I am thinking it may be harder to fly with the above, so when I go to fly a real, modern heli, it will be easier than those on my sim with that t/x ?

Usually the only difference in heli and plane radios is the location of the switch for flight modes.  Otherwise, they are pretty much the same (that is unless your radio is strictly for planes...meaning they have no heli flight control mixing).  Not familiar with your radio to know if it has heli modes or not...but for the SIM, that shouldnt matter.

Im also not familiar with your SIM...but as long as the models represent some type of collective pitch helicopter...I dont see why it would hinder you in your learning with it.

If you dont think its "lifelike" enough...there is a pretty decent SIM called Clear View that can be bought for about 40 bucks.  Its what I have used to learn to fly helis with and does a pretty good job of representing the physics of modern helicopters.  It even has an mCPX model.

Its definitely not on par with Phoenix or Real Flight...but doesnt cost nearly as much either.  I look at it like this...its perfect for learning to fly with.  Once you can fly...and want to work on more 3D or stunts...it may not be as good as the other higher priced sims.  But, save that money for now and learn with the cheaper SIM while putting that money into your helis.  Once you can fly...upgrade the SIM.

Goodluck with learning.  Once you can fly around, especially if you teach yourself like I did...there is no better feeling of accomplishment in the world...well, outside of being a parent that is.

TA for the info

When I first learned the Guitar, I learnt right handed on a left handed Guitar. This set me back a long way when I later got the correct set up. I just didn't want the same to happen here re the type of sim and t/x as listed above

The radio is a computer radio with mixing, but I have not attempted any t/x mixing for Heli's with it. Looking at the control setup and tweaking on the SIM software it seems mixing is done there (from what I observe from the bar graphs when operating the sticks). I don't understand heli mixing.

Anyway, I am getting to grips with hovering and moving around a bit with it. I find tail control difficult though, probably because as a plane flyer I usually ignore the rudder (except on take off).

For the SIM, it doesnt matter what kind of programming your radio has.  All of the mixing gets done on the software of the SIM.  Saying that, you only need a 4 channel radio to fly on the sim.  If you want to be able to switch into throttle hold and different flight modes...then you would need a 6 ch radio for your SIM and assign those channels in  your "joystick/controller" setup within the SIM.  Or do what I do and use the keyboard for throttle hold and stnt mode.

no problem...we were all at the same place you are now...at some point.  Its easier to ask the seemingly "dumb questions" now to save yourself some money and headaches down the road trying to figure it all out on your own.

goodluck and welcome to the addiction that is RC helicopters!  lol
