Sorry, I just couldn't resist doing the subject that way again. I promise not to use that title format any more......

However, now that I have your attention, I would like to say that ........

........Stuart tanks have always been my favorite. After WWII a neighbor of mine in Chicago had a surplus M3 parked in the empty lot next to his house. It was all locked up, but we used to climb on it and play soldier until he yelled at us darn kids to get the heck off of it. I have no idea what he did with it, but it sure gave me much fun and great memories.

When I got into 1/16th scale tanks, I immediately bought two of the Verlinden 120mm Stuart resin kits. Making the kit R/C wasn't going to work out because of space restrictions, so I decided to keep it static and scratchbuild an M5 (more room). That worked out (just barely) using the Tamiya Sherman R/C stuff. I soon realized an M8 conversion was possible if I was careful about how I built the turret deck, and that worked out as well.

Soooooo......... Of all of the things I have built over the past 20 years, my M3, M5 and M8 are my pride and joy. If my house ever catches fire, I'm just gonna grab my pants and my Stuarts before I hit the street ....... I just hope there is enough time to grab my pants.

First, here are some photos of my M3. Photos of the M5 and M8 will follow just as soon as I take some. Gimme a couple of days to do that, I gotta do some touch up work on the paint dings and such, and then I will do a walk around on those two.

Yay Rex!  The Stuart has been my favorite U.S. tank since I was  9 years old. I'd love to see an RC one.    Good work chum!

I have never understood why companies can come out with 1/24 RC tanks, but wouldn't use the same mechanics to make a 1/16 Stuart. I'd buy three of them for the same things that YOU made, Rex. (Of course, I'd also have to build a second M8 turret to go on an LVT). Great job on your models, as usual.

And as far as re-using that awful title again, if you decide to post up some German armor, you can always say "Lowe, und Tiger und Brummbar....Achtung!"

Patski!!! and kettenkopf!!! and sassgrunt!!!...... Ohh, I hope you will settle for photos of the R/C M5 and M8 conversion!!!

Somedody stop me!!!

Here are two photos for now. Tomorrow I will take more pics in a walk around style. I really regret I didn't try to R/C that M3 Verlinden kit, but resin is brittle, there wasn't enough room on the interior for the R/C stuff, more Tamiya track would have to be modified, and I was just lazy. But I may take another look at scratchbuilding an M3.

Beautiful work Rex....just love that Gen. Scott. All you need now is an M-2A4 or Mae West. All those old rivet carriers look neat.
That quick change multiple turret design is great.

Personally I would love to have the open top M8 turret with the howitzer. I would make an LVTA4 to put it on.

pattoncommander...

I have thought about doing a Mae West or an M2 combat car, I just love that old stuff. Hunnicutts' book on the Stuart is loaded with interesting light tanks from the 1930s. Everybody had a different idea about what a tank should look like back then. Now everything looks the same. I can't tell 'em apart.

Yeah Rex,

Something about those old riveted tin cans that made them look really neat. I have a nice DVD "The Tanks are Coming" showing tank training at Ft Knox in early 1940, following a NY taxi driver's army service with his taxi destroyed by a tank running through a shed where he had it hidden. Plenty of M-2A4 "12 tonners" and "mighty scout cars" rolling. There are two movies with that title...the other being the one about Shermans in Germany (late 40s) ...both shot at Ft Knox. Both movies did a lot for recruiting. The old M-2A4 is more like someone's idea of an Army battleship with a half dozen cal 30 MGs sticking out all over, a lot like the early Russian multiple turret heavies.

~~~~~~~~~
I have seen both of those movies many times, and the one made in 1940 is my favorite when it comes to the tank driving scenes. So far I have been able to resist the urge to scratchbuild a Russian T-35. In 1:1 scale it's 32 feet long ...... two feet long in 1/16 scale! But if ya luv turrets.......it's a beauty.
Here are some exterior photos of the M5 with early turret, late turret, M8 armored trailer with quick disconnect , early fording gear, cullen hedgerow cutter, bustle basket and skirts. Did I miss any accessories?
Apparently that early fording duct arrangement (as shown) didn't work out very well. Two of the engine compartment vents were plugged with plywood, fitted and caulked into the engine vent frames. They were supposed to be pulled out with a rope when the tank got out of the surf, but I guess that didn't always happen in the heat of battle and overheated engines resulted.
I'll post some photos of the M8 and other details later today or tomorrow.
Some M8 photos. The M8 turret deck is interchangeable the M5 turret deck. Converting Tamiya Sherman track into Stuart track with outside guide horns was a time consuming and tedious project. 120 of the Tamiya center line track guides had to be cut in half, flattened, and shaped to make the 240 outside guide horns needed. Then I had to "adjust" any that would hang up on road wheels, return roller or sprocket when running.
I showed the M8 pictures to my 7 year old.  He loved it.  When I showed him the shot of the turret inside he said "it even has a..." so many times I lost count.  Even has a pistol...  even has a helmet...   even has a knife...    "even has a" over and over till my eye begain to twitch.
Then he asked if we could build one.  My eye twitched even more.
Keep the pictures comming, I will keep him busy till then with "Greatest Tank Battles" disk one.
With a relatively short commute to work I've always though a go-cart would just be too cool as a mode of transport....
Rex we have most of the same likes.... sans motorcycles......
I'm ALWAYS skeptical when I see things on here, especially when they are not displayed next to items we can associate with.
But these really are RC tanks and in 1/16th scale too after seeing the last pic with the T01 and Type I transmission.
The fighting compartment is ultra detailed too, really cool work Rex!
First, I thank all of youse guys for the kind (and funny) comments
Second, I have often thought of putting a ruler or something familiar in the model photo to show the scale. A guy I worked with once asked me to show that my tank was 1/16th scale. No problem, I'll bring a photo with a package of cigarettes in it. After thinking about that, I decided to tell him about my 1/200 scale model of the same kind of tank. He was amazed at how tiny 1/200 scale is............Here are the photos..........
