If I could find sub C NiCads at a decent price I would use those. They are out there but rather expensive anymore.  I am done buying NiMh's and am converting dying or dead packs to lipos until my regulator supply runs out and then to Life' packs.  I always liked sub C packs and they pack a good punch but as you said at the sake of some extra weight.

Heck, I use sub "C" for my receivers ans "D" for my servos, both are 6v in same aircraft. Mind you I fly Hugh aircraft . I personally don't like using lipo batteriesI don't feel comfortable using them, seen to many burn.

Batteries America has 1800 ma Sub C packs 4.8 Volt at $18.  What do you consider expensive?  I have always found the NiCads the least expensive.

Well, If weight isn't an issue you can get them in up to 4200mah cells I think, AA size nimh top out at 2500mah

Both work great in most cases.

AA's won't have the capacity that a sub-c will have.If you are using many servo's or big servo's or servos with high current drain...the AA will run out quicker than sub-c. I used to use only ni-cd but i have changed over to ni-mh and 6v for receiver packs. Depending on size of plane and servo's used i'll use either A size or sub- c size cells. No more AA size packs for receivers for me.

On a large scale plane, I would go sub-C or even C.  The AA have much higher internal resistance to ge the capacity up.  If your flying a plane with high drain servos, the pack can fade quickly.  Horizon has Venom 6V packs really reasonable, and they include both a standard RX connector, and a Tamiya connector for quick charging.  The 3000 mah pack is only $20.99.  http://www.horizonhobby.com/products/6v-3000mah-nimh-large-scale-receiver-battery-VNR1502  of course, they are on back order right now.  I just received one, and am eagerly awaiting the second one.  Seems to be a well constructed pack.  Should handle anything I throw at it.  Of course, I'm not doing any giant scale 3D, at least not yet....
