I need some help here. I recently got a fairly new (little used) Futaba 8UAF and am in the process of transferring data from my original 8UAF Tx (damaged screeen) but for some unknown I just can't get the Dual Rate functions activated. The ATV values for Ail, Elev and Rud are all set at 100 %, and when I punch in the required dual rate values of 50% as per my instruction manual it seems to go as it should but when I come out of the D/R screen and go back to the model screen there is no D/R function when I activate the D/R switches. I have made sure that D/R switches A,B and D are all properly assigned so what am I doing wrong or what step or steps have I overlooked ???

It sound like you are doing everything correctly for the 8UAF, but if you now have the 8UAFS Super, then the dual rates need to be set independently in both directions. IE, Up and Down, Left and Right. You will need to move the stick slightly off center one way and set the dual rate, then move the stick the opposite way to set the dual rate in the other direction.

Also make sure the ATV settings are the same for both directions.

Thanks for your response Dave and both radios are 8UAF models so I am at a loss as to what the problem might be.

I had a Futaba 8AUPS for many years. Like most computer radios, the ATV sets the maximum amount of Travel that you want the Control Surface to move in each direction. The Dual Rate values are a percentage of what the total ATV is set to. If Low Rates are set to 50%, then that rate would be 50% if whatever ATV was set to.

When you set ATV, for Aileron, as an example, did you move the Aileron Stick to the Left, set the value, and then move the Aileron Stick to the Right, and set the value?
Did you change Expo at all? Expo is also tied to the D/R switch and the value should be Zero to start with. If the Expo value was set to -100, you would see virtually no movement of the Control Surface.

Yes I did set the ATV values as you asked. I have all the ATV values set at 100% and previous to attempting to set the D/R rates at 50% I had the Epo rates set at 100% to help calm the model. Will reverse all the Expo settings to zero and try setting the D/R again.

On a Futaba Tx, Expo should be set to a Negative value to make the feel Softer around Neutral. On a JR Tx, the Expo should be set to a Positive value to get the same results.
On a Futaba Tx, if you make the Expo value +, it will be More Sensitive around Neutral and Less Sensitive as you move the stick out.

I had a UCANDOO 46 that I test flew in the winter, one year, off the snow, with skis. I set the Expo to 70%. As I started my takeoff run, I gradually increased Throttle and gradually pulled Up on the Elevator Stick. I reached Full Throttle as I approached the end of the runway. I finally pulled Full Up on the Elevator Stick and the aircraft rocketed straight Up. The moral of the story is that I had too much Expo and there was virtually no movement of the Elevator until I reached Full Up on the stick.

With your Futaba Tx, start out with perhaps -30% Expo for your first flight.

Remember, adjust your Control Surfaces mechanically to get the desired maximum Deflection. Next, set the ATV to be sure you have the proper maximum Deflection Up/Down or Right/Left, then set the Dual Rates, and then set the Expo.

So what did the problem turn out to be?

I just knew someone was going to ask that. I did everything right up to when I activated the D/R switches and punched in 50% rate I wanted, then silly me turned off the switches and input the same % on the other side similar to doing Expo, and of course it cancelled the normal 100% high rate so there was no D/R. Attempting it again this morning and at last the light went off in my head. Age is a hell of a thing...idiot.

The good news is that human error is much easier to fix than a defective 8U transmitter.

Glad to hear you found the problem and got it working!
