I have'nt ran my nitro trucks in two yrs, it's winter now and I thought nows the time to tear the trucks down, and go over everything. But just this morning I remembered that when I put the trucks away two yrs ago, I don't think I put after run oil it them. So if I did'nt how can I tell, also if I did'nt I assume Im going to need two new engines, is this right, as I've heard that the nitro will pit the inside of the engine if after run oil is not used. Is all this correct? One of the trucks is a Traxxas with a 2.5 R engine, if I need an engine do I take it to the local hobby shop for the trade in program? Also with the trade in program how much should I expect to pay for the new engine?
Any advice will be greatly appriciated,
Paul

I don't use After-Run-Oil and I've had engines sit in a drawer for years with no ARO and work fine. If there's a problem with sitting around for a long time, it's usually no more than the carb getting gummed up from fuel residue.

In fact, I think it's the fuel residue (mostly the oil from the fuel that's left over after the alcohol evaporates) that protects the engine internals.

A friend once gave me his RC airplane which had been sitting around for years. Still fuel in the tank, and the engine so gummed up it wouldn't turn over. I disassembled it, cleaned it, and it was fine. I did use ARO during the re-assembly though.

In all likelyhood, your engines are fine other than the carbs may be gummed up enough they may need a cleaning before the engine will start and/or run properly.

Some fuels have castor oil in them. If yours did, it will probably be okay. If your fuel had all synthetic oil in it, I'm assuming you can kiss the bearings goodbye at the very least.

If it were me, I'd pull the backplate of the engine and have a look. If the bearings are rusty, get new ones. About $12 a set from RC-Bearings.com.

The majority of airplane fuel has a decent amount of castor, and the oil content of airplane fuel is 18-20%. Car fuel is roughly 8-12% oil with some 12-14% oil content.

The heat is what freed the engine up. Guys use WD40 in model engines and I do not know why. It's a petroleum based chemical and it doesn't mix with the fuel. Using clean fuel is a much better way of freeing a stuck engine. I mean, the dried out oil in the engine was after all in the fuel ran before. It dissolves in fuel readily and usually quickly too. Petroleum can make marginally sealing silicone o-rings turn to mush also.

WD40 is sometimes known for actually loosening up rust particles from old bearings and eventually eating the engine from the inside out. My philosophy is simply to use glow fuel (nitro) instead of petroleum chemicals and heat to free an engine.

Just my over-taxed opinion.

Well this is good news, I always thought it was etched in stone that if you did'nt put after run oil in the engine it would ruin it. Do you guys think I should put in a new glow plug and try and start the engine and see what happens, or just go ahead and pull it in order to inspect the bearings?
I really appriciate all the help,
Paul

If the crank turns smooth, run it. If the crank feels gritty as you turn it, pull the backplate and inspect.

If your old glow plug is in decent shape, try running on it with fresh fuel. It's not a bad idea to have a spare glow plug or two handy just in case. If the engine blows glow plugs over the first few tanks, the bearings may be faulty.

If the engine does start, it may run like crap for a short period of time. As the fuel flows through the carb, it will dissolve the gummy fuel residue and the engine will clear up after a few minutes or more of running.
