Status: offline 		Getting back to the modeling roots and scratch building from plans again. I'm interested in the ways that others are cutting the multiple mitre/angle cuts on the diagonals of their stick framed parts. I'm marking and cutting out side the lines with a band saw or Zona saw and sanding to sneak up on a good fit. I can get perfect fits, but it is very time consuming. Is there a better way?

Status: offline 		I've stick built 1/2" thick frames [and thinner] by just laying the stick to be cut over the longerons, marking for the cut with an Xacto knife, then just using a razor saw to make the cuts. If you can't trust your eyes for a vertical cut, then just use a vertical guide to set the saw blade against as you make your cut.

If I make a cut that isn't absolutely perfect, I glue it in anyway then pack the gap with fine balsa sawdust and hit it with CA.
Once I finish the control surface or fuselage side, then I surface it with an 80 grit sanding disk that is mounted in my drill press. Set the table for a "squeeze fit" to just take a very light cut and the glued up pile of sticks comes out looking like it was machined.

Status: offline 		I mark them, cut them with a scroll saw, and finish them to the line on a 6" dia. disc sanding table, after that I glue everything together with thin CA. Next I pull the work from the table and run a corner glue joint with medium CA in every corner and kick it off. I don't ever worry about the excess CA on the balsa because the way I sand flat surfaces and fuse sides is like cheating its so easy. I place 6 or 7 sheets in a row of 9" x 11" 180 - 220 grit sand paper on a flat surface like glass from an old sliding glass door with 3M 77 spray adhesive. I make sure not to allow any of the sand paper to overlap at all, then I work the control surface, stab, or fuse against the table instead of using a sanding block against these items. this type of sanding will take everything down so fast and true, you just won't believe it. I guess I have been doing this for 20 years or more and I have done it on stuff all the way up to 70 % airplane size with the same results. Here is a just glued picture and a couple more just a little while later.
