New to Jets, and I have a 12X that I'm going to be using on a PST Panther. I'm setting everything up and I find myself wondering what most people ( I realize this is personal choice) are using for the brakes? I'm thinking the Aux2 3pos switch because its easy to setup, but it would be more comfortable on the Mix/Hold Switch on top or perhaps one of the sliders on the side.

I'd really appreciate the input, there's no sense in learning something already experienced.

Thanks

Dale

Personally I used the slider but thats just me. I use the switches for various things on different models so I chose a method that I would be able to standardize on.

I do both. I have the Jetronics Low Loss brake valve so I can land with a little positive pressure with the slider. The down elevator is nice for taxiing.

If you're going to use a proportional brake valve, such as the BVM Smooth stop or Jetronics or UP, using a switch would defeat the purpose. I do not like on/off brake switches due to the tendency to lock the brakes up. I use a side slider combined with a proportional brake valve. I've used all of the ones mentioned above, & prefer either the BVM or Jetronics valves. Both work great.

Since buying the Hitec Aurora 9 and Spektrum DX18 I have started to use the right slider  for wheelbrakes, and find it much better than mixing it on down elevator as I used to do on my old JR388.
I plan to use the left slider for progressive airbrakes

Used to use right slider only, now have option of down elevator and right slider, end up using the down elevator almost all the time.

Down elevator and right slider.

Like Terry, I mainly use the slider as a "parking brake." I use down elevator on taxi and landing roll. It's easier for me to stay on the stick to keep aileron into the wind on a crosswind rollout and brake with a bit of forward stick, rather than reach for a slider.

I have the brake application/forward stick mix contingent on the gear switch being down. With the gear switch up, forward stick does not apply brakes and cause bleeding of air pressure.

Right slider.

+2- 12X here and right slider/BVM smooth stops. From flying full scale jets, down elevator was not applied too soon in the landing roll, due to aerodynamics of lifting (taking possitive contact with the pavement) the mains off of the runway, reducing braking effectiveness, until below 80 knots. This is why some of you guys who are using down elevator are porpoising the jet down the runway. So, I definitely don't recommend down elevator. I think this down elevator technique started when radios didn't have enough channels, and some have just stuck with it. Again, my technique....IMHO.

Awesome, thanks for the replies. Since most people are right sliders, and I'm using the hydraulic breaking system, thats what I'll go with.

Thanks much

Agree on the slider, I feel the same that down elevator is a no no. It will cause the problems describe above.

Brakes on down elevator is not a "no no", it's a personal preference. Lots of us have been using it successfully and effectively for years. I have seen lots of "porposing" on landings but none that I would attribute directly to having brakes on down elevator.

On the other hand, I've seen lots of guys have problems with directional control during the landing roll. Is it because they have taken their fingers off the stick to move brakes on a slider and/or because the short throw of the slider makes small inputs more difficult? I really don't know and I certainly wouldn't presume to tell the many slider advocates their method is a "no no".

Obviously, both methods work for different people. Let the new guy decide for himself what works best and the next time this recurring topic comes up, he can cast his vote.

Yes, totally agree, porpoising down the runway has nothing to do with your brakes being on down elevator, it has everything to do with coming in too hot!  Unless of course, you are trying to apply the brakes while you're still flying, then you'll certainly drive the nose in, most of us apply the brakes tho when we're already on the ground

Mike
