Been riding the fence for several weeks choosing a winter project from several options on hand. One problem is all of them are 20-30cc and I'm out of hanger space.

A few days ago the Evolution 10cc caught my eye and today Seagull's Funfly 3D and it seemed to me that they might make a good combo. I have a couple of Seagull planes and they are reasonably well done. While I'm a sport flyer, some hotdogging might be a good diversion and if the Evolution doesn't yank it hard enough... it'll fly sport well enough.

A big factor in committing to the combo is it might just be the take it on vacation platform that has been desired. We vacation sometimes several weeks with my sister in Michigan and there is a local RC field there, but taking a plane has been a problem. I'm not into electrics and even small glow stuff has just been too problematic with needing flight box support.

The plug in wings with top hatch and no flight box support might make this a good travel combo.

Sounds like a real solid plan and a fun project to me, and of course you might be one of the first to give us a field report on the new 10cc gasser. The bright colour scheme would be a big plus for me.... I like it.

Hey Karol... I'm sure to not be the first. The plane did arrive today but it will take some time to collect what is needed for the build and some things are going to be new for me. I'm thinking that I'll go with a single LiFe battery and use a BEC on ignition and I don't currently have a charger for LiFe technology.

Will probably go with a 6oz tank given the advertised fuel consumption is 1/3 oz per min wide open throttle and I see a post describing a nice small gas fuel tank.

Needed as well are servos and I'm thinking strongly about going 2.4 with radio gear and currently everything I have is 72mhz.

I'm kinda slow to change when what is here is working fine.

So... the next few weeks will be getting my ducks in a row with some new technology.

It took me quite awhile to make the transition from 72 to 2.4 as like you I had so many models on 72 which were working great. I eventually made the switch about 2 years ago by getting a FrSky 2.4 module for my trusty Fut 8UAF plus Rx's and so far it's all been perfect and switching did'nt cost an arm and a leg.

I've been sorting the options for this plane. One issue is that this size gas plane shouldn't be equipped with a battery for both flight control and ignition so I've got to upgrade some equipment and technology and will make the plunge into LiFe batteries. Also, lacking an available PCM receiver for my 72mhz, it's a reasonable time to begin making the transition to 2.4

I'll post a few assembly thoughts and pics if they seem significant to this thread as it comes together after a week or so and a few visits by the brown truck.

Karol... Wishing you and yours happy holidays as well. As well, I'm looking forward to seeing the completion of your profile project. Went to the field and there were a few gathered and talking as a strong cross wind was blowing... I elected not to fly as well.

Some projected numbers for the Funfly 3D - Evolution 10 combo.

Wing Area: 840 sq.in.
Weight: 96 oz.
Wing Loading: 16.46 oz./sq.ft.

So wing loading is a pretty good number.

No reports yet of the projected thrust of the Evolution 10cc.

Now those are some great numbers and I do envy you for them Why, because the projected numbers for my profile are nowhere near yours, still I'm being very hopeful.

My numbers are :
Wing area 820 sq.ins.
Wt. 120 ozs.
W/loading 21.06/sq. ft.

Since it's not being built as a 3D model but rather just for sport flying those numbers should be okay.

21 oz is great for sport flying. I'm no 3D flyer. I've played with it only a few times at the field with my Yak but the throws on it are not set up for it and the servos probably not fast enough. Have done a little simulator 3D where the results are most often a crash.

Have crunched a few numbers... the Funfly 3D list weight as 5.1 - 5.7 lbs and the upper number is probably with the Saito .72 they list as a recommended engine. The Evolution 10cc is 4.4 oz heavier than the Saito .72 but the supplied fuel tank is about 12oz and that will be cut back to an 8oz so its about a wash between the Saito .72 and Evolution 10cc on weight.

I've still got some.... but they don't get flown much, especially those that are 2 stroke glow.

Unpacked the box and took an initial look and was generally pleased.

A survey was made of the firewall and gear strut support, which I usually find lacking on most arfs. The gear support is under a fuel tank platform making it difficult to access but there are some slots that will allow getting four small pieces of corner stock to add some support. The firewall has tri stock on the two sides installed with hot glue so additional support will be given to top and bottom using epoxy.

Laid it in the cradle to check engine mounts for fit with the Evolution 10cc to discover the mount holes don't fit the firewall T nuts by about 3/32". The slots need enlarging, otherwise the engine fit the mounts fine with no muffler clearance problems or issues with setting the fore/aft position of the engine to provide a good cowl/spinner relationship.

It is sure a lot different ball game size wise than the 20-35cc planes I've been messing with.

Enlarged the slots the necessary amount to install. I used my vertical mill to do so but it could be easily done with a dremel. Fore/aft position was then set and engine mount holes drilled for 6x32 screws. There is some right thrust so the engine needs offset so as to center the spinner back plate. Used was a string pulled from the tail forward to provide centering at the thrust washer. This was easily accomplished using the slots in the motor mounts to adjust the sideways positioning.

The engine is mounted inverted.

Looks like your winter project turned out to be a Christmas project and if that cute looking 10cc gasser runs as good as it looks then you've got a winner there.

For those who may wonder about fitting this engine into a .46 model. It fit very well into the Funfly3D with no issues.

Not a lot going on yet. The IBEC and tank have arrived. The larger shipment of servos, battery and new radio and charger came today, but during the only short time my wife went to the store so they will try to deliver again tomorrow. The tank does look to work well to provide the needed space to get ignition wires and carb control rod forward. The tank is lighter and 2-3 oz less volume than the stock. It does seem that in order to pad the tank, the ignition will have to go aft of the tank.

On another note, some guys are offering running reports on the engine that are encouraging. It's seeming quite possible that a 14x4 funfly prop will work, which pleases me as I'd hoped to keep the noise down and dislike screaming meme setups. A slower high torque flyer is what I'm looking for.

As far as the build goes, the Seagull Funfly3D is proving so far a good fit for the Evo 10cc. The engine dropped into the supplied mounts that had T-nuts pre installed in firewall. The cowl cut outs were easy for the inverted installation with no issues. An 8oz fuel tank allows space for the ignition wires to snake aft of it and the HV cable was adequate length to position the ignition unit just aft of the fuel tank. The interior is busy but nothing has required shoe horned in.

Curiosity is growing about what AUW will be. I've guarded hope that it will have unlimited vertical... we'll see.

The build is complete and I'm pretty happy with it. There were no issues and hence no need for pics. It came out at the top end of the published weight using the gas engine with ignition. Most impressive was the balance... it was right on the prescribed CG so no additional weight needed.

The build went well with it getting busy inside but no shoehorning was needed.

If it flies as good as it built... I'll be impressed. I'm in hopes that the gas engine has a wider power band than glow and that rpms can be reduced by a larger prop for less noise.

When the rain stops... if it ever stops... will maiden and try to get some video.

Mine is ready for maiden when weather permits. Noted yesterday was that my ignoring of the decal sheet missed the two decals for inside the cockpit. Oh well.

The Funfly 3D got its maiden yesterday. It flew well with minimal issues. Starting setup was with 80% throws and 40% expo and ailerons were very hot and elevator somewhat hot for me. The second flight got a reduction to 60% throw and increase to 50% expo on both ailerons and elevator and it flew much closer to a sport plane with those settings. I was able to give it elevator without some inadvertent roll.

It was faster than expected for the thick airfoil. The Evolution 10cc gas engine is a good performer that allowed a lot of throttle jockying with half power needed for most flight and gunning it in the up lines.

It did produce unlimited vertical though not with great authority. After another few engine runs with the 11x6 prop, it will get changed to a larger lower pitch which should slow the plane some and provide better vertical torque.

I can't speak to the 3D character of the plane as I'm not a 3D flyer but reduction in control movements makes it a good sport flyer.

The Evolution 10cc gas engine ran great and I think will be a winner.

The plane is lightly loaded and quite nimble in the air. Full up elevator in a tight loop at one third power yielded no tip stall.

I'm looking forward to trimming the subtleties and changing to a more torque type prop.
