Mostly a lurker here but had to tell someone that I just ordered a Goldberg Super Chipmunk and a Saito .91! Anybody with experience building this kit and have tips to share?

Make temples of the ribs. and formers
Drilling the hole for the rudder pushrod will be hard, get your self a long bit
The plane has been around for a while and it really flies great.

I did ditch the plastic wing tips, belly pan, and cowl.
I carved a balsa wing tip, and made a built up belly pan. That way I could cover them.
I bought a fiberglass cowl from fiberglass specialities

I have a saito 91 with mine and you will have to experiment with props to fit your flying style
I use a 13x8

Thanks for the heads up, wp. I've seen elsewhere that it needs a lot of weight in the nose to balance out so I'll keep an eye on that as I build. Would you make the templates in case of the unthinkable or for some other reason? I checked out fiberglass specialities website and may use their offerings depending on what the ABS looks like. It took 1½ yrs to build my Smith Mini Plane so I'm sure this will drag out also, but I may document the Chipmunk build here just for shiggles.  That is of course if the Mayans are wrong....

Cheers!

I have one in my garage waiting to be built with a brand new Saito 100 for power. A couple of other projects to finish. If you're going to do a build thread, I'm watching!

I built one back a few years ago, very enjoyable build.  I powered mine with the Saito 100, pulls it around with authority.  I added the Robart  3/8" Straight Robo Strut from Robart for the landing gear, not cheap but worth the money, made a big difference. http://www.robart.com/air-models/chipmunk  You may want to think about going with a pull/pull system... I also ditched the plastic wing tips and belly pan and substituted with balsa. Great build, great plane!

the reason that you want to make templates is that the landing gear is in wing. so if you have a oops landing, and if it is bad you will take out like 3 or 4 ribs on each side

Thanks for all the good info guys, I'm looking forward to getting the build started. I will be asking those who have gone before me for advise along the way I'm sure.

I would rake the main gear struts forward a few degrees. This model doesn't do grass well, as the main wheels are directly under the leading edge of the wing.

Don't even THINK about using the eggshell (uh, I meant ABS) plastic parts in the kit. The word "flimsy" was invented for Goldberg's "plastic" parts. Yes, I know some guys who did and didn't have a disaster on their hands... but that was after they beefed up the assembled pieces with judicious use of fiberglass. Less hassle just to buy from FiberGlass Specialties. Easier to paint, too. Or do like wickedpissa (?) said. That's what I did for the wing tips and belly piece, along with a FS cowl.

This is a great model. Mine had a 91 Surpass. I loved flying it, but the ground handling was marginal and I got tired of having to go fetch the thing after a taxi nose-over.

LSP972, The field where I fly at is grass and I've never experienced any nose overs on mine.  But to be honest I can't remember if I raked mine forward a few degrees.Built mine about three years ago, and yes she's still around.  I do hold a bit of up elevator when on the ground.  With the Saito in the nose it dosen't stay on the ground that long...  I agree with not using the supplied wheel pants as they are junk.  I liked the look of my Robart struts so much that I never got around to putting them on!  Fiberglass Specialties does have fine products...

I've got a good start on the Chipmonk build and thought I would share some photos and observations.

The first photo shows the obligitory fist part built.. the horizontal stab. Skipping to the wing build shows what happens when you put drill to plywood where the plans say to drill out the LG block. I had to grind out the plywood so it could be replaced with hardwood that I kicked out a couple degrees plus I'll be using the Robart struts on this thing so I think it'll be durable.

The right wing has a slight bow to it after gluing the sheeting on one side so I tried to coax it out with some wieghts. It ended up with about 1mm bow.

I'll be using the Saito .91 inverted if anyone has any suggestions or warnings. More to follow....

I'll be using Dubro nylon hinges so I used a .04in drill and a thin blade saw to make easy work of the slots. I purchased the pants and cowling from F.S. along with a set of Robart main gear legs. I'll get some photos of the installation if anyone is interested.

Mine was a great flyer...  Agreed on the templates for the ribs around the gear.   Used OS91 (prefer the Saito) with a 14x7 MA prop... Had to squeeze into that smaller spinner.   This plane does not fly fast to look scale.   YouTube the Chipmunk with Art Scoll and watch him fly,  The Goldberg makes beautiful lines and will do a slow tumble (lumchlovak) ?? spelling there.
Unfortunately,  I was doing the low inverted 'ribbon cut' and got dumb thumbs.
I like the Pepsi finish.  I took some photo's of the one at Sun-N-Fun in Lakeland years ago with that finish.
You have a GREAT kit!

I'm hoping that I will never need to rebuild the wing because of a bad landing, but you guys have convinced me to make templates. I noticed that by holding the engine up to the plans as called for indicates that the spinner will be 1/2 inch further forward than shown, so I'm going to move the firewall toward the wing the 1/2 inch and keep the cowl in the proper position. I'm just waiting for an orderd tru-turn spinner to show up before I make balsa dust. I'll document what I end up doing for all to see here.

Cheers!

I really like my Chipmunk. I used 2x aileron servos rather than the bellcrank. Also added flaps which aren't really necessary, but fun to play with. I used balsa for the wingtips and belly as others have mentioned. Had lots of problems w/ the ABS cowl and wheel pants cracking. I eventually used some thin CA and 3/4oz fiberflass on the inside and that seems to help for now. If I were to build another, I'd go w/ the Fiberglass Specialties cowl and pants. I found the tail tends to wag in windy conditions. I eventually modified to a pull/pull rudder system and that seemed to help. OS 61FX pulls it around great. Flying this brings back memories of seeing Art Scholl in action. Good luck!

Here are some pics I just took of mine. Construction is nearing completion, Wing Fuse and tail are done, just some final touches like the two covers on the bottom of the wing, getting the pushrods in and I think it is ready to cover. I put the servos in the wing in front of each aileron instead of the center one. Goint to use a Magnum 91 FS in it.

Thanks for sharing the photos acdii. I didn't do the flaps or the dual aileron servos just for the simplity of it all. I figured pushrods and bellcranks work in full scale...., plus I'm cheap and trying to build as close to plans as possible, but I did consider them. Here's a few images of the progress to date.

Looking good! Make sure you put some fuel tubing over those clevis.  I like the landing gear, Robarts?

Yeah I plan on using tubing to secure the connections. The gear came from Robarts and has the tabs welded on for pants.

The Goldberg Super Chippie is a very nice flying bird and I enjoyed the two I had very much. The only thing that would make it better would be if it were blown up to about 85 inches. Who's in?

Count me in Chad. My Goldberg Super Chippie and my Tiger 60 are my go to fun fly planes. Easy to fly and very predictable.
