I need to step up into the 2.4GHz world and everyone is on-board with the Spektrum brand. What about FUTABA?

Exactly what is their FASST and S-FHSS systems? I see my favorite vendor has a 6-channel radio with the FASST for just 219 and in stock! What systems work best with BOTH Tamiya and Clark/El Mod arrangements?

I have a few more tanks to build and buying 50 dollar receivers each time takes me further and further away from the new frequency and now is the time to get on-board.

Any input?

Well I use EPS 2.4, but they are out of receive right now. I have a MPX 4000 and a Airtronics
all on 2.4. Extreme Power Systems makes conversion to 2.4.

Well I use the Futaba system 2.4 FASST system since I was familiar with Futaba products already.

It is very nice and easy to use. The receiver you bind with the transmitter, set up the DMD/MF just the same as a 4VF or 4YF radio and off you go.

The system is a spectrum finding and locking frequency finder that basically finds an available frequency, locks it and your a go. No crystals or dip switches.

A nice side benefit is when turning the radio off, it locks the receiver such that stray signal cannot cause problems.

When you have multiple tanks the cost of the receivers is important.

Hobby King sell Orange recievers for $6.00 that work with Spektrum radios, and the Hobby King T6A is a darn good radio for under $50 with a receiver. Extra receivers are only $9.00. I have Spektrum, Hobby King and some Aero sport 2.4 Ghz radios and they all work fine for tanks.

I really like the Hobby King T6 a because they have proportional channels on 5 and 6. Really good for DBC3 as you can use a servo to control gun elevation and do away with the HL gun elevation cam, and not have the Machine gun an cannon activation interfere with it.

My Leo runs with a Futaba Skysport 2.4 FHSS  4 channel.  Easy to bind and zero problems. It was about $89 from my hobby shop.

I have run it in club battles with no interference.   It too will lock the receiver when the transmitter is turned off.  In the battle when my tank was knocked out I just shut off the transmitter and the tank stayed dead.

You cant go wrong with the spektrum dx5e and orange 5 channel rx combo. Ive used it with tamiya and slu with no issues. Folks at the club use them with clark and DBC with zero issues!

When I was just buying for tanks, I went with the Futaba Attack radio, but when I got into planes and helis, the Spektrum was the way to go.

The DX6i is a great Tx and as Dan mentioned, you can get a pile of the Orange Rxs (Spektrum clones) for the cost of one Futaba or actual Spektrum. There are some reservations with putting them in large AC where range is an issue, but none whatsoever in a tank that's never more than 200-300 feet away. I use them in planes up to quarter mile with no problems at all.

my favorite subject as I have a Turnigy 9X, Spectrum  DX5e and DX6 ( Both DSMX ), Futaba T6EX ( Fasst ), HK T6A and a Hk 4 channel. The 4 channel is ok and i use it to loan to friends.
Spektrum  great radios, not so much the Dx5e as it is a base radio and doesn't have too many bells and whistles, good for beginers and single unit users - Can't self center left stick  what a bummer.
DX6 - Sweeeeet Radio and with the orange recievers you have a hard time finding a better value, for Tanking this is probably the best foot in all worlds. ( You can use this for planes and heli too ) easy to get really good deals on used ones if you want to save a few sheckles.
Downside to the DX6  $70.00 to have spektrum self center the left stick.

Futaba T6EX - What can you say other than rock solid performance, you pay for it but if your flying the comfort alone is worth the extra money. Tanking - it is a bit much for a tanker but if you decide to grow in the hobby the T6EX will move with you until you get into the real technical 8 servo jets etc Upside  Futuaba will send you a spring and a swing arm at N/C to self center left stick. Once you open the radio though they kill the warranty.

HK  T6A - second biggest value, only problem is all programming has to be done on a PC. Take your laptop to the field and that is not a bad thing. Pretty tough to beat the cost. Take my advice  buy stefano's programmer, much better than the download from HK.

Turnigy 9X - I have one and am waiting for my second one too arrive. Flash it too ER9x open or just ER9x and you have the greatest value in radios. More programmable options than you can count, each switch, button or gimble can be programmed individually and you can have 9 models loaded so you can flip from tank to plane to heli back to tank all in a few seconds. Less than $100 delivered if ordered from HK and you are armed with a 2.4ghz frequency hopping radio that will do everything the $900 Spektrum and Futabas can do.
Learning curve is steep but there is a whole community of users that love to help out.

best advise is too learn about the radios pros and cons, then go price & service  shopping. Help when you need it on one of these radios can make the difference between a great day and a crappy one.

I make my own self centering stuff out of resin. I have Spektrum and Hobby King parts to make the sticks self centering.

If you buy from them (Horizon Hobby, same price new zas anywhere else, $160 no shipping or tax) they'll do it free before they send it out. I'm pretty sure they'll also send you the kit free if you call them if you want to do it yourself, they are known for their impeccable customer service and have always taken care of me with planes and servos.

Do you only drive tanks? No heli/planes? Hobby king also sells clone Futaba rx's. I am a Spektrum guy (helis and planes) but where I live I dont have much signal noise. If you plan on flying with it also I would say Futaba.

Not sure what the comment is for about flying and using Futaba only... Spektrum works just as well for flying. The major brands all use essentially the same technology for their 2.4 systems.

I like those proportional channels, PERFECT for barrel elevation. I wish I knew how to mod my Spektrum to use those... or that they would simply release one :P

I started my switch from 72.mhz to 2.4 with a Spektrum Dx7. Bought me a Dx8 the beginning of the year. I have not had a single problem with either radio. Rock solid. I don't buy the hobbyking Rx's, just don't want to take a chance with my giant scale gassers so I stick with the Spektrum brand.

Hitec Aurora 9. Simple to operate, plenty of channels for an average flyer and a full touch screen.

I personally have never had a signal issue with Spektrum(I own a DX6i and DX7). But I have seen it happen to other friends and large events(IRCHA,NATS,Efest))who have since switched to Futaba and never have anymore issues.

'TANKS' for everyone dropping by and weighing in. I will proceed with my original interest with the Futaba radio 2.4 FASST operating system since all I own are 3 4YF radios and one of them being in the 72 type... all because of a bad eBay deal.

I guess I am still looking forward to returning to the museum someday, so MY radio needs not to be a concern going into it as the way I am set up right now.

It's also good to know other systems work well too. Such an education for the radio illiterate... like me!

I use Futaba 8 and 9 channel systems with Futaba FASST modules and receivers. They've been a wonder for my 1:10 models especially.
Where the old 75mhz systems were more prone to electrical noise ( the 1:10 are all metal) interference which could raise havoc with
the transmission gear selector, these have been quiet.

The reliability spills over into the 1/16 models as well.

As I have 2 Futaba 8UAP transmitters I purchased one of Hobby King's Futaba compatible 2,4 Ghz modules and a number of receivers. I haven't
given it an exhaustive test but indications are that it is a crackerjack value for the money. A good alternative for ground based models as the older Futaba 8UAP systems may be had for pretty low prices.

I also like Futaba for the superb range of servos available for them; between Futaba, Hitec and the bone shattering Savox servos there one for virtually everything...

Jerry

When I bought mine they said they would not do it on shipping out and I would have to send it to a service center after I got it or some crap. It has been a while so I don't remember exactly.

out of curiosity how many of you guys have actually gone in and done some programming on your radio to maximize your tanks movement etc?
Anybody mix the channels to get a certain type of response out of your tank?
Just wondering how folks use their radios.

I don't know how many channels you guys use, but here is a great radio for every occasion:

http://www3.towerhobbies.com/cgi-bin/wti0001p?&I=LXCVPZ&P=7

I have the 8FG which is great, easy to program with tons of options.
This new one has FHSS and FASST and telemetry.
Hobby King or Value Hobbies sells FASST receivers under $30, they work great in my helicopters and planes.

FYI all of the older black or siver FUtaba Skysports will run on 72 AND/OR 72 Mhz Crystals and dual conversion RXs. The Futaba 4YF in 72/75 & 2.4 GHz is teh Chevy Impala of radios. Inexpensive, durable, simple, reliable and oh...inexpensive. It is the ONLY radio I use or sell. I have other Futabas and they are great, but I like to subscribe to the KISS principle.... Keep It Simple Stupid. I have seen so many guys with complicated radios have programing issues that ruin their day at Danvile or NEAD events. I also have one radio for each tank. I have two J6s and some 4 EXs but rarelyuse them. I have never been accused of travelling light....
