Yesterday I had a friend do some silver soldering for me. He introduced me to a tool I had never seen or heard of before, a jewlers torch. I was thinking "I gotta get me one of these".

So today I did. Now for the questions.

What kind of flux do I need for silver soldering? Is it the same as flux for lead soldering?

What is the difference between hard silver and soft silver? Is it the percentage of silver in the rod? What is better for things like landing gear?

Is brazing stronger than silver soldering? Would brazing be better for landing gear and wing struts?

I've been messing with rc planes since 1990, I can't believe it took 22 years for me to find out about a jewlers torch. Duh.

Thanks for taking the time to answer my questions.

Is the torch that you bought a small acetylene torch? - I mean a torch with two tanks - one oxygen and one acetylene?

No. One oxy, one MAPP. I haven't had time to play with much it yet. I was able to ruin a small peice of brass very quickly though. Good thing I have plenty of spare parts.

Do you have the burnz o matic setup. One o2 tank and one MAPP tank?

Brazing will be a little stronger then silver solder. Yet I have never had a silver solder joint break. I use Otay silver solder and flux. I get them from Lowes.

I have this little one too. It uses the butane refill. It does a good job.

I still wrap the two pieces to be soldered with copper wire then solder them up.

Yes, I have one similar to the burnz o matic setup. I've been practicing with it tonite and I'm still burning through the brass I'm trying to solder to the 1/8" wire. Too hot but not hot enough if you know what I mean. It's a learning process.

I saw one like the harborfreight one at home depot for about the same price but didn't think it would get the 1/8" wire hot enough.

I used silver solder from Amazon dot com (of all places!)  A roll costs about 10 dollars and comes with the correct flux.  It requires the Bernz Mapp plus O2 torch you have.  I used the same one and it worked perfectly.

http://www.amazon.com/Alpha-AM53500-Cookson-Elect-Silver/dp/B000G36BJK/ref=sr_1_28?ie=UTF8&qid=1356005809&sr=8-28&keywords=silver+solder+kit

I used this solder and torch on a Balsa USA 33% Fly Baby monoplane. The first picture shows several of the main gear attachment "hinges" that were soldered and cleaned with a wire wheel. The second one shows all the parts that required soldering. The third is the completed main gear with spreader bar and other silver soldered joints.

Read up on silver soldering online.  Then practice, practice, practice.

And make sure to clean everything to be soldered using a wire brush and something like disk brake cleaning spray.

BTW, the Oatey brand silver bearing solder can be applied with a standard soldering gun or iron.  I have used this product many times on music wire gear legs wrapped with copper wire but is nowhere near as strong as true silver soldering.

True silver solder needs 1000 degrees plus to melt.

Thanks for the info pettit. I ordered a roll of the solder from amazon, that's a good price, it's much higher localy.

I finaly managed to solder some brass strips to the wire last night but ruined many peices of brass before I got it right.

The landing gear you built looks very good. Like you said, practice, practice, practice.

I agree that the Otay is a lot softer then true silver solder. Yet it has been strong enough for my stuff. I use it for almost everything. I use it for my battery plugs, landing gear, and anything i need more strength then normal solder.

The hardest part is learning how to do it. I have burned through many pieces learning how to burn my fingers.

That little torch will get hot enough to melt the 1/8 inch wire. It does not have the fine control of the temp as the two gas setup. I did find that the cost of those little tanks gets pretty high if you use it a lot. It always seem to run out when you are in the middle of a job and have to run to the hardware store to get more.

I believe it's ment to be that way. I have that problem with anything that I can't see the level of.

Yeah, the oxygen tank for the burnz-o-matic costs $10 and lasts about 5 minutes. But I don't want to mess around with a true oxy-acetylene setup... renting tanks from a welding shop, etc. Maybe if I did more brazing I would, but for the occasional job I just keep buying the little oxygen cylinders at home depot.
