Hi,

I have been thinking some years about this SAAB J-29 "flying barrel" in scale 1:4.8 below but where I fly it is grass and rather dry so a kersoene turbine is not the best choice for fire/safety point of view. So I have been thinking that maybe there is some electric fan solution out there for a model this seize/weight.

Can You guide me in some direction where a fan suitable for a plane like this can be found?

TF8000 comes to mind. search here and rcg to find some thread in the last year about some high powered options with it.

When You see this video below of a similar size and weight model, a Hawker Hunter, with a Schübeler DS-94-DIA HST with DSM6745-700 motor and 14 cell LiPo batteries (14 cell 2 packs in parallell, ThunderPower 65C) I'm kind of convinced now the J-29 flying barrel model above would also fly as good as the Hunter with such setup:

The Hawker Hunter in the video has a weight of 16 kg (35 lbs).

Schübeler DS-94-DIA HST has a thrust range 100-130N and that is about exactly what is recommended for the J-29 model (since the turbines recommended are JetCraft J90+, JetCraft J130+).

The J-29 model would probably be little lighter (12-14 kg / 26.5-30.9 lbs) then this Hawker Hunter 16 kg (35 lbs).

I did know it would not be cheap to get a model this seize airborne with fan solution but a turbine is not cheap either. One, at least me, would probably only afford one setup of batteries for such airplane.

What do You think - would You select a Schübeler DS-94-DIA HST with 14 cell Lipo for the J-29 model? If not, why?

If anyone has a suggestion for a better fan then a Schübeler DS-94-DIA HST for a plane like the J-29 please post suggestion(s).

I contacted Schübeler and they said DS-94 HST with DSM 6745-700 on 14S should be a good option for this J-29 flying barrel plane but they asked at the same time for the seize of in- and outlet on the plane so I will try to get info on that.

J-29 flying barrel is perhaps not the prettiest plane, it was said it was "an ugly duck on the ground but a swallow in the air". But for me living in same country these J-29 was made and flown it is kind of the historic background also that makes it more interesting. I meet a person last spring that flew J-29 so there are still persons around that flew these planes in active service.

It is for Kirk's large Hawker Hunter. PM the original poster (gunradd) and ask him for contact info for Kirk and speak directly to Kirk about performance. I also believe that he was at Jets over Kentucky (USA) this year so if you do a search on the event there are photos and might be a video of the plane flying on a Schubler 94HST on 14S. I saw a video and it was very impressive.

Status: offline 		My new EXTREME Alloy 127mm Ramtec fan will produce 22lb thrust on 14 cells, fan weight is 1080 grams all up with motor cover ready to install. May be an option to consider, the fan is $499.00 complete with motor ready to install. It runs an HET 800-73 series inrunner, extremely powerful and very efficient. I saw 21lb thrust with old 5000mah packs, 145A, with new larger capacity battery setup 22lb+ will be easy.
