Nice one, Fiery. Have you run it yet?

Here's a photo of Dave Owen's own one, in an R/C oldtimer model (forget what it's called - Challenger?). Also a snippet of it flying: - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=o2JZ8dS-WTs&feature=youtube_gdata_player
The prop is something like a 14x6, and the engine runs very well indeed.

Steve

It is Serial No. 33 and is pristine. It has not been run since leaving David's workshop.

Whether to use it for it's intended purpose, or just leave it as is, is something I am not yet decided upon.

I am not a collector. I like to use (or at least run) the engines I have, but this one grabs me as being really special.

I have flown my GB using R/C in full size Playboy Cabin and this year in an Airborn 810 sq. in. wing area. A nice engine easy to start and adjust. Gordon and Dave did a great job on this reproduction. Jack

Thanks Jack.

What propeller do you fly yours with?

I am thinking a 12 x 6 wood or composite.

Fiery, with the Playboy Cabin at 800 sq. in. wing area I used Graupner Cam carbon fiber 12.5/6 and an APC 13/7 sport prop. With the Airbron 810 sq. in. wing area started with the APC 13/7. Last Summer I flew the Airborn in Texaco event at two SAM contests. Restricted the intake and used a Pro Zinger 15/4 wood prop. With the APC 13/7 and restricted intake climbed too fast so I had to shut down the motor before the fuel wa all used up or would go out og sight. Not a good airplane and motor combo for Texaco but wanted to fly the GB in a couple SAM contests. The GB would need a smaller model for limited engine run event. A larger model would do better for Texaco. Just flew what I had those two days. Mostly I use the GB for sport flying. Jack

Many years ago I saw a picture of a GB Sabre 150 in a model magazine. It looked like a cross of an Elfin 1.5 with an Atwood Wasp tank.

I heard rumors of a modern repro a while back but I don't think it ever happened.

Does anyone have an update on this one?

Dan, Sabre 150 per David Owen. Dave examined one of the few made some years ago and drew up a basic plan, with a view of making a replica. One of Gordon's early associates in Adelaide, Mel Sharpe lent Dave an original unmachined crankcase casting but Dave lost it somewhere in the workshop and thinks it got thrown out by mistake. So Dave did not proceed with a replica. Dave says who knows he may resurrect the project one day. Dave sure does build nice engines. Jack

For those who wish they could obtain a Sabre, or early Taipan, there may be some good news this year. I can't say any more at this time.

A Sabre would be nice. I'm sure a lot of collectors would be interested in that one. Might even get Stan Pilgrim interested.

I don't think you get Stan inserested  Dan. He's been of ill health of late  and to my knowledge Stan hasn't touched an engine  or anyhing else for for quite a while now.
But then again, stranger things have happened.

Fredo

GB 5 cc (No. 104) sold on eBay (111005172039) yesterday for $405. It is probably a fair price for a brand new GB 5.

I don't know what they cost new but, if corrected for inflation, it might have been about the same in real terms.

I think that Peter Burford sells his little engine for a realistic price and the David Owen GB 5 is probably worth about the same.

Long live Australia's precision engineers!

One guy obviously wanted it badly-to put in 18 bids (he still didn't win it!). You're probably right about the price being about what you'd expect after adjustment for inflation over a decade. I think I paid A$280 when I bought mine from David Owen. Given that the A$ is about on par with the US$ that's about 5% appreciation per year over a 10 year period..........

"One guy obviously wanted it badly-to put in 18 bids (he still didn't win it!)."

How about the guy who bought it with a winning first bid?

Actually it was me, I just wanted someone else to agree that it was a fair price; it not everyday that I buy an engine like the GB 5!
