I have been using NiMH and NiCad batteries in my airplanes for years. Now want to upgrade to next generation of batteries. Choices are Lipo, Li-ion, and LiFe. I fly mainly 30cc 3d airplanes. I have the Triton EQ charger. Which of the 3 batteries are the safest and can be charged in the airplanes? Not wanting to start a discussion fight, just need honest suggestions.

I had a good supply of voltage regulators so when my nicd/nimh packs needed replacing I installed lipo packs. Some planes they can be easily removed for charging or long term storage and the ones where they are not easily accessible I simply installed extensions so I could  balance charge them. For those I use a cellpro 4 so I only needed the balance line to charge. I'm not a worrywart about charging lipos as I take care of my packs , maintain them properly and  monitor them during the charge cycle.
When my regulators run out I will be using life packs as they typically don't require regulators (exceptions are older receivers and some ignition modules). Some differences between life and lipo packs are lower voltage output, and lower capacity compared to lipos of the same weight. Life packs have a longer life span (charge cycles) than lipos and can be discharged to a lower level and bounce back plus they are more stable and durable. Most who worry about lipos charge lifes in the plane.
Using the Triton EQ  you need bth the output lead and the balance lead to charge packs. You would have to extend the balance lead to either a jack on the plane so you can use an extension to the charger  or to a place where you can easily access it. The power lead of the pack could be connected to a regular charge jack switch (like the nicd/nimh packs) or extend it to a place where you can access it.
The life packs are touted to be the safest to charge while in the plane.

I have changed over to A123 packs in everything. In most cases no regulator needed, no flame up issues I am aware of so I can charge in the plane. Bulletproof for me the last two seasons. I hear you can get over 900 cycles from them. I love these batteries! A123 is a brand name but I read they are different than batteries from other makes labeled LiFe. LiFe seem to be similiar though.

For 30cc I would recommend a single 2500mah A123 (genuine, not the various Life cells floating around)

There's lots of places to get them, I get mine from WrongwayRC.com with two outputs, one goes to a heavy duty switch, a voltage drop (he sells these), and then to the ignition (I would HIGHLY reccomend an optical kill like the RCExcel here as well). The other lead goes to a switch then the reciever.

No regulators, no problem charging in the plane, holds a charge forever when sitting, nice constant output, and charge very quickly with the likes of a Cell Pro 4 charger.

Thanks for the advice, I will take it and order the 2500mah A123 battery.
