Can anyone tell me if there is a book that teaches battery basics.  I am looking for a book that goes through all the different types of batteries and how to charge and care for them?

I'll second that reference as Red's comments and advice are excellent. If you read the side bars you will have most of the info you need for any type of battery.

Hi!
It´s all very simple.
There is and has been four types of batteries used in our R/C systems and powering our electric motors in our airplanes.
These types are: NiCad, NiMH, LiPo and LiFe4 batteries.
The first two are practically the same, often used in 4 or 5 cell pack making 4,8V and 6v packs.
They are charged the same; either slow charged with 0,1C (0,1 C is one tenth the nominal mAh rating of each battery pack) or fast charged at 1C or more.
Ie. One 4,8V 2000mAh pack is charged with 200mAh overnight ( means for around 16-20 hours, it's not that important how long really as long as it is 12 hours or more.
NiCad and NiMH batteries can be fast charged but they loose their capacity real fast doing so. Life expancy for both types are around 10 years consatnt use. They can also use the same slow charger (often sold with radiosystem)!

The modern Lipo and LiFe4 battery packs on the other hand is made at a higher voltage (LiPo at 7,4V and LiFe4 at 6,6V) which means that you must be carefull what typ of servo to use as most servos has a upper voltage limit at 6V (their electric motors cannot cope with higher voltage for longer times). Recieivers can stand these voltages without problems
LiPo and LiFe4 batteries must be charged with special charges. LiPo cells being suspectible to rapidly catching fire if charged in a wrong way.
LiFe4 batteries on the other hand are totally safe.
Both of these battery types contain nearly dubble the amount of "usefull power" compared to NiCad and NiMH batteries and are also lighter and gives a more constant "Power supply".

mAh and Voltage.
mAh tells how long you can use the battery!
Voltage means power!
