Hi to all,
a newbe question here. Why are turrets on model tank limited to 320 degree or thereabouts rotation ? I do not know if real tanks have same limitation ( was never inside one ! ) but I doubt it. Imagine they have fiull 360 and can continue rotating as long as the crew want.

And a related question - how to we modify standard off the shelf models such that turrent has full 360 unlimited rotation ?

Thanks
seandeg

Tamiya rotates 360 OTB, as does Hooben. I presume you have neither of those brands, ergo your turret rotation ring gear has a spot with no teeth. Simple to just file a couple teeth in that spot and you've got 360 rotation.

That's the first thing I changed when I FO'd my T34, and then only to realize ALL Heng Longs are the same way. I knew Tamiyas were not like that, but you do still need to count how many times the turret turned in one direction and then "unwrap" the wires by turning the other direction back.

I wouldn't go more than a 360 or wire damage could occur, so HL made sure that didn't happen. Just depending on what your tank does too.

Cutting the square off the turret ring into teeth will resolve that.

Yes, it's very easy to get 360° rotation by simply notching a couple extra gear teeth into the turret ring as stated, but as Jeff said, continually rotating the turret in one direction too many times will twist the wiring & could damage it.

So if all you do to get 360° rotation is just mod the ring with extra teeth, then make sure you don't rotate in any one direction too many times!

Or, you can add a slip-ring to the mod & rotate unlimited times in any direction! The slip-ring mod isn't extremely difficult, bit it is a pain in the neck to do, & the slip-rings have such small wiring that they can also break very easily.
See my post with a couple pictures where I did one here => My New Heng Long Panther G

It works fine, but after a while I had issues with the tiny wiring coming undone, but it was probably due to the fact that I mounted the slip-ring in the bottom hull & had much longer wires that were rotating. Others have done the slip-ring mod too & have mounted the slip-rings in other locations, like attaching a bracket to the upper hull for it. With attaching the slip-ring to the upper hull, the wires that need to rotate coming out the one end of it will be very short & less prone to breakage or their solder joints failing!

If you do it, good luck, & don't forget to start a thread with some pictures.

Looks good Craig.

I believe the only tanks that would truly benefit from this are modern tanks... WWII tanks are not set up to spin that fast either.

I put a slip ring in my H.L. Pershing last March; and posted a thread on this forum ...www.rcuniverse.com/forum/m_11018580/anchors_11019947/mpage_1/key_/anchor/tm.htm#11019947

Thanks to all for your replies,  Robert , Jeff , Craig and strmnd54. The links to the slip ring solution projects are wonderful.
Happy Christmas to you all !
