Since I can no longer find K2R in California as it's banned for being useful, does anyone have recipes so I can concoct a substitute? I need to clean up a fuselage with some oil soaking before I repair it and can't find K2R here any more. I don't need a spray a brush on would be great as it's easier to control. As I recall, it seemed like fine talcum powder with some kind of solvent.

When I was still in Calif ACE stocked it. If not then just use Talc or ground up kitty litter and your covering heat gun to remove oil from wood. You can even heat up the stuff and toss it into the plane while still hot to draw out the oil. When we had club members that were heading to Vegas we had them smuggle things like Balsa Rite across the boarder. I'm sure someone would smuggle you a case of K2R too.
When the great State of Calif. decided my Kangaroo skin hunting boots were made from an endangered specie I used to go to AZ or NV and buy them. Then they started making them in China and the boots were no longer worth the effort.
Know anyone out of state that would send you a stock pile of the magic drug?

Thanks for the tips. I mixed some baby powder with alcohol and that worked quite well.. The baby powder was cornstarch, not talc, but it still got the oil out. I think I may try the heat as well, maybe with an iron.

Definitely would not want to break any of the laws that protect this state from the real world.

If you use an iron ( I wouldn't ) when you are done rub the iron over a dryer sheet while it is still warm, then rub it over a clean cloth / paper towel. I also do this when covering to keep the iron clean . Blowing hot air in with your heat gun might also raise some of the oil .

Another thing I have done : if you have lots of time, flood the fuel tank area with kitty litter and just let it sit for a few days. Be sure to shake it now and then to shift the litter. When you think you have it done, empty the litter out and blow the tank area out real good.

I have also used " CRC Electronic cleaner ". Spray it in let it sit a few seconds then use an old tooth brush to rub the old fuel out. This may take a few applications. I DON'T recommend using brake cleaner spray, mostly because I've never tried it and don't know what it will do. I keep the elctronic cleaner on my bench because I use it for other things also . ( cleaning monokote when it gets to bad .) ENJOY !!! RED

Thanks for the tip on the electronics cleaner! Good idea! I'll also try it where the ply sides de-laminated and left a residue from the glue. I want to get it off before applying epoxy.

As for the iron, I was going to put quite a few layers of paper towel between it and the oil-soaked area. Also, I have one cheap iron from Tower and a genuine brand-new Top Flight iron I picked up at the local Goodwill for $1. .

BTW, the oil soaked area is a small one where the side sheeting came away from the firewall long before the crash and the oil penetrated over a long time.

The heat only brings the oil to the surface. If you use kitty litter you want the real fine stuff at the bottom of the bag or you can put it in a blender. Talc, corn starch, baby powder, it all works but the big thing that was band in Calif. was the Balsarite. Slather that crap onto old oil soaked wood and the covering will stick. I didn't care for it but the guys at the club were bringing it back from Vegas by the case. I just used cheap lacquer hair spray. The iron softens the hair spray and it acts like a stronger glue. All the inside areas of the fuse that can get fuel soaked in my planes is fuel proofed with thinned down epoxy. I just used 91% alcohol to thin down mixed epoxy and slather the inside. I have had a couple tanks let go and the fuel proofing is a life{work} saver.

It's not covering that I'm worried about, but rather gluing the airplane back together! (See the thread on my repair "challenge" at http://www.rcuniverse.com/forum/m_11329235/tm.htm/ ) There was one area where oil seeped in because the fuse side was not well bonded to the firewall. I don't think Balsarite would help epoxy to bond. I'm also seeing that, in places where the plywood delaminated, there is a tacky layer that I think will cause a problem with the epoxy bond. I'm using alcohol and a stiff brush to remove it. I'd considered something like Goof-Off but it leaves a deposit as well. I think getting parts cleaned up is the biggest task (except for cosmetics!)

BTW, I now put all my fuel tanks in a plastic bag to contain leaks. Where possible, the mouth of the bag dumps outside of the fuselage.

I just bought a can of K2r from my local Ace Hardware store.
I admit it is not an easy product to find, but it is available.
I also live in a small rural community and could find it.
Look around, it is available.

Good Luck,

That does bring out a lot more problems. I have used tooth picks going from the outside of the fuse into the parts when re-gluing for added strength on repairs. I'm heading out for some Xmas flying then have a party later today. Maybe tonight I can look at what you have and come up with some off the wall idea? I have used a lot of acetone to do clean up work too.

No Ace hardware anywhere nearby and True Value did not have it. I'm at my mother-in-law's for Christmas so will check around here. The K2R definitely works better than anything else I've tried.

Having worked in management in corporate America, I've learned to use the terms "challenges" or "opportunities to excel" instead of "problems."

It will be interesting as the fuselage is very thin ply that seems to have been formed into the desired shape, bulkheads and firewall added, then some reinforcing down the sides and foam added to top and bottom. The skepticism of some in the club, including the previous owner who assembled the plane, are acting as a bit of an incentive! Also my wife says to just buy a new one!

I've used the toothpick trick before and will likely do the same here (with bamboo skewers), as well as fiberglass and epoxy in the inside. The trick will be to keep it straight while the epoxy sets, especially as there are multiple bond in different locations that need to be made at the same time. I plan to make up a jig from some melamine-coated MDF shelving that is very flat.

I guess I should take some photos, now that I have disassembled the parts (and somewhat recovered from the trauma), to show it in more detail and record the reassembly. I'm betting on success!! The hardest part will be to make it look like something besides a re-assembled wreck!

The rest of the Christmas party just arrived so time to mingle.

Thanks, KW! I go through Ione on the way to the field. Didn't realize there was an Ace there.
