So I'm coming back into the hobby after 15 years away...and I'm looking to get my vintage Losi XX in some races again. It's old...but was top of the line back in the day!

Anyways I'm looking for a good but easy on the wallet esc/stock motor brushless combo. Anyone have any recommendations? I've been looking at HobbyWing JS5 Sensored Brushless RC Car Combo w/ Justock 45A ESC + XERUN-17.5T 1900kv Sensored Motor  http://www.hobbypartz.com/07e-combo-js5.html.

I dont need anything high end...just want to get back on the track and if I fall in love with the hobby again...I'll be prob getting a newer car.

Thanks in advance!

There's plenty to choose from have you looked at Mamba Castle Creations? Or another route is going on Ebay and finding a used Traxxas brushless system. They are good and reliable.

The Losi XX is a, sadly, very outdated platform. If you break something, there is little parts. It should be more of a shelf queen.

Anyways, that motor and esc will fit fine, although it is very slow and has much torque. You would not be able to keep up with the other brushless systems. Here is the best idea instead;  http://www.amainhobbies.com/product_info.php/cPath/1_221_911_1949/products_id/204569/n/Castle-Creations-Sidewinder-Sv2-1-10-12V-Sport-ESC-Motor-Combo-w-Neu-Castle-1406-5700kV

Good luck!

I have to throw my 2 cents in and advise against a 5700KV motor.  It will be fast as all hell but, would be too much for track conditions.  Little 2wd buggies work well with motors in the mid 2000KV range up to high 3000KV on off-road tracks.  I have a Mamaba Max Pro with a Castle 5700 and used it in a Slash 2WD and my EXO.  It was difficult to drive the Slash and it's overkill for the EXO.  Nonetheless, it was entertaining.  If you elect for the Castle, consider the 3800KV motor.  Although Castle is in the process of releasing updated waterproof versions of the Sidewinder systems.

The 17.5T system you first listed is good for stock class racing; you just need to choose the correct gearing for the track.  You can use taller gear ratios when you bash in order to gain some speed.  I use a 2950KV motor in my Associated B4 and with the correct gearing it shoots past 40MPH in the street on 2S LiPo.

It think a motor in the 3000-3500kv range would be best.
The ezrun 35amp system, or the leapord 60amp system will work fine. Both are under $100 shipped for the ESC and motor.
It doesnt take alot of power to move that model.
No reason to buy an expensive traxxas/mamba system.

Also, both the leapord and ezrun speed controls have adjustable punch control and breaking force. If you buy the optional program card (recommended) then you can tweak how the system performs to best suit your model. Having the punch control high will help keep your older model's driveline from being strained to much, but still allow you to achieve higher speeds then it could have stock.

What he said!  I would highly advise against the CC sidewinder Sv2.  That's the exact system I HAD.  I was impressed with it's adjustability via USB, but they lost me on reliability. Mine AND my buddy's crapped-out in a few months.  His was likely due to an accidental puddle encounter, but mine PFFT! for no reason.  We've both got EZruns and they've been goin strong for 18mo+ so far.  No problems.  If you go with Castle at LEAST wait for the Waterproof ones.......
