Hello everyone, I've been lurking these forums for a while now but I've just recently acquired a Heng Long KV-1. After I plugged the battery in to charge, I wanted to check out the internals of the tank. I unscrewed the six screws on the bottom and the screws on each side right next to the drive wheel to separate the upper and lower hull, and after checking it out I began to put everything back together. After fitting the upper hull into place, I noticed that there was a gap between the two hulls located in the midsection of the tank. I'm no expert, but I'm pretty sure that's not supposed to be there, and after fidgeting around with the two parts, I can't seem to get it to close.

Also, this screw (located toward the front) seems to not be tightening into anything, however it looks like the hulls are lined up pretty well, I'm not sure what's going on and I don't really want to break anything.

Anyone have any advice??

Mine is like that too and it has never been opened up yet. The gap is part of the upper hull, so I believe it appears you can seal it with some strips of styrene or evergreen.

Oh, and welcome aboard!

Wow, never noticed it on mine till I read your thread and looked. Yup, I have it too. but like Panther F said, it looks fairly easy to fill in, just wondering why it's that way in the first place?

Possibly air gaps to ventilate the heat.

Maybe they knew about something ahead of time?

mine are both good might be a slight sliver of a gap but not as much as the one you show in your pic

As said before, not really a gap caused by a fitting issue, just definitely part of the way the hull was cast, so the only way to get rid of it is to manually fix it by adding a filler like styrene along the areas of the ridge which need closing.

Not sure why they needed such big holes on the underside of the upper hull in some of those areas, or why they couldn't have at least continued the small ridge so that the connection between upper & lower hull was more seamless without those gaps showing.
Maybe it serves a purpose like Jeff mentioned, maybe not, but I don't believe we will ever be able to fully grasp the logic behind what is known as ........ Heng Long!

I found that the centre screw pillars don't line up due to warpage either side of the battery compartment  , the trick is to secure these two screws first . Adding an extra flange of plasticard  helps as well .

HL StuG is the same way. I assumed it was for ventilation, but it's not like the hulls are "sealed" without it anyway.

Maybe its easier to cast, or simply uses less plastic so saves money?

Gaps like that exist in most of the tanks. Tamiya, HL WSN.... Unless you run in dirt and sand like I do they are not a big concern. The ONE item you do want to keep clear of debris and dirt are your gearboxes. Seal them off from the outside at the output shafts and cover them to keep the oil and grease in and dirt and loose screws etc... out! If you want to seal off the sponsons try using self-adhesive weather-stripping that they sell for doors and windows. It can be trimmed and layered very easily. I'd post some pix but the RCU server is not allowing it.
