I just received a new OS Max FS 62 V engine. What I notice is that my new engine does not have the breather nipple on the crank case side as shown in the manual. Is this nipple something new that I should have or is it a thing of the past ??Stevenotsew_evets@frontiernet.net

Old style is vent on outside. New OS port the vent into the intake so it will burn the outflow, and eject through the exhaust. All internal now.

Not the new V series four stroke OS engines. It has the vent nipple under the cam shaft on the right side of the engine. You need to provide fuel line to vent it outside the engine.

"You get what you pay for"

I figured at $279 I would have the best of the best.

So far I like this engine but wonder why I dont see the 62V in ads or reviews,

Anyone else have this engine ?

What reviews would you give ??

If there isn't a nipple fitting on the bottom half of the crankcase, then no, it doesn't. IIRC, the intake vent arrangement has that vent nipple higher up on the case, near the mounting lugs; and of course is connected to the carburetor by a piece of fuel tubing.

OS went to the "intake vent" nonsense some 10-15 years ago, as a concession to the enviro-nazis in Japan. I don't know all the details, never handled one of the "new" engines, but I distinctly recall complaints about the "new" system causing mixture adjustment problems and reduced power.

I'll tell you one thing... there is a big difference between current production OS four strokes and ones made 10-15 years ago. I have a couple of the older ones; a .52 and .91, both Surpass II's. I looked at the new ones because I will need an engine in this size/range when I get around to doing the H9 Saratoga; and I was rather underwhelmed with the new engines. I looked specifically at an OS .62 in the LHS. Dunno if it was the most recent production or not, but it had the "intake vent" arrangement.

I'll pass on new a OS ... Saito 72 looks much better to me.

Looks to be a vent engine. Must be because of the angle valve set up.

There is a glow engine forum and it also has factory support. You can go there and ask Bill Baxter any questions you have about any of the OS engines plus read reviews from users.

Well folks,  I m an official Bumb AZZ.

When I received my new engine I was excited and installed it in the aircraft before looking.
There IS a vent and it sits right at the area where the Dubro mount meets the engine mounts.
I found the vent but had to cut off the Dubro to get to the vent exit itself.

What a bad location to make the vent nipple.......

I have run this engine for about fifteen minutes yet there is no evidence of "why" theres a need for the vent.

There is even a vent in your auto engine. An engine builds up pressure while running so the pressure needs to be vented or relieved. In this case it will also vent oil so you want to put fuel line on the nipple and vent it outside, usually on the bottom of the cowl.
On the older cars we called them breathers and they were located on the top of the rocker arm covers. The newer engines now have the breather vent going into the intake so the oil is vented back into the engine. Sort of like the original smog control system in cars. It's there for a reason. OS used to have them on the back plate of the engine.

Yep.

My ol 1956 Chevy needed a "breather" installed because California thought it would prevent smog.

Thanks everyone.
