Hey all,

I have a discontinued Hitec Laser 6 transmitter that runs off a 600mah NiCD battery along with a 600 mah NiCD receiver pack. I just purchased a 2000mah NiMH battery to replace the aging battery (it doesn't hold a charge like it used to) along with a 2000mah NiMH receiver battery. I used to use an overnight NiCD wall charger to charge the old packs.

I have a Turnigy Accucell-6 that I plan to connect directly to the transmitter to charge the new pack, but I was wondering if there would be any problems with using NiMH in the older transmitter and if charging it through the transmitter is the best way to go?

Thanks,
Jake

Never had a problem and have done it several times with Futaba gear.

There MAY be a diode in the tranny which will usually mess up your attempts to charge using an external peak detect charger.

a battery is a battery the goo on the inside makes no diff...as long as the voltage stays the same. In other words a 6v Nicad and a 6v flux capacited ion revolving etc etc battery is still a battery...the mAh rating will make it longer between charges if the load remains the same...but charge time will increase with mAh rating so do use your Accucell 6.

You can still use your wall wart charger. Just adjust the charge time in proportion to the capacities. This is actually better for your pack than a peak detect charger. Only thing is that you have to plan ahead. Charge time for a fully discharged 2000 mAh pack with a 60 mA charger is around 40 hours.

By the way, most NiMH batteries have a high self discharge rate - you can't charge them now and fly next week. The exception is low self-discharge NiMH cells, such as Eneloops.

Thanks guys that is very helpful!

The high self discharge rate is interesting, what amount of charge do you recommend for storing these batteries?

With a high discharge rate, it doesn't matter how much you charge it for storing, it will still discharge on it's own, better to just charge it the night before or the morning that you intend to fly; best choice as mentioned would be Eneloop NiMh Batteries, much lower discharge rate and long run time.

I use a 'Sanyo Eneloop II 2000ma 9.6v Tx Pack' from 'Hangtimes RC' http://hangtimes.com/txpacks.html ; charge through the Radio Charge Port with either a wall wart or my peak detection charger which is a CellPro 4S Charger.

Absolutely no problems.

A 2000Mha NiMh pack charge rate should be around the 150-200ma range for a 10 hr charge (o/nite) NiMh packs can take a higher charge rate than a nicad pack.
Over winter time when not in use, a trickle charger can be used to keep the batteries topped off, this will eliminate battery internal parasitic discharge.
