Hey all

Im building an ESM 74" corsair and am installing the new Gen 3 electric retracts and I've run into a problem. The "drive"cylinder for lack of a better term, to fit correctly, or at all, is going to require some modification of the wing spar that I'm not exactly comfortable with. I'll try to take some pictures if I can but if I am looking at them right, I'm going to have to cut through about half of the total ply of the spar to allow them to fit. Has anyone else run into this? or come up with a solution. I've been building for many years and I've spent a fair amount of time working through this but I'm not sure what the answer is going to be.

I thought I would reach out and see if anyone here has run into the same problem.

thanks in advance

Casey

If you cut that much of your spar, you might end up with a fodding wing.  And not like the real one folded.

i think the spars are already notched for the retracts,   have you put the spars in the right way round??

Dash, that is my concern.

Alan, thanks for chiming in. I Believe I have put the spars in correctly. The holes line up right under the retracts but even without the spar wing connector in, the spar section going through the center of the wing is going to have to be cut, along with the wing connector spar section. I don't see how else I could rig the three pieces (the retract, the spar, and the wing connection piece) to allow them to fit.

My concern is that the Gen 3 retracts have a different geometry.

Thanks guys

Case

I've had to remove percentages of spar on a couple of models to make room for retracts. I've used carbon fiber to restore the strength of the spar through the section where part of it was removed. Modelers are lucky to have CF, although we often over use it. This is one place it's worth it's weight in ..... well, worth it's weight in carbon fiber. It's worth more than gold.

I make a ply/CF/ply sandwich to epoxy to the spar around the removed section. The sandwich extends both directions from the removed section. CF is many times stronger than the spar. So if you have say 10% of the original spar supported, and the support either side is adequately epoxied, the result is probably stronger than before. I've got a Corsair and Hellcat that have been flying with CF reinforced spars ever since Lados came out. I'll post a picture when pictures start working again.
