Hi, Been a long time fan and lurker. As a private investigator I stumbled in here researching the 808 Keyfob cams some of the enthusiasts attach to planes and choppers. A super handy tool in my trade it has closed many a case.

Now I want to fly helecopters. No water here or room for planes the helecopters are perfect.

I have been reading and realize baby steps are best at 1st.

I am ready and commited to purtchase my first set of training wheels and want to know what I need down the road for computer simulation.

I figure I'll have no more than $500.00 in my final helecopter and rempote after my training wheels expense.

I am guessing to do simulation I'll need at least the remote I'll end up with?

I'll want to end up with one thats outdoor and can handle light winds. Not too big and not too small and I'll not be doing flips and upsidedown flying. I do want all the channels though. I think!

A Question I have is info I don't much see in my searches. What are the realistic flight times and charging times. What ever you guys suggeast I am going to want to know those predictions.

For training wheels I am open to hitting your classifieds but have no idea what to shop for.

Thanks!

When you say "training wheels" do you mean training gear on your helicopter to keep from tipping on take off when you are a beginner? Or do you mean what heli to start with as you are learning? If you are going to be learning so you can eventually get a heli with a cam....I would say get a good simulator. Realflight is what I use but there a lot of others. As for a good beginner heli to learn one.....gosh there are so many different opinions in here. Some say get a coaxial to start(not what I did...nor would I recommend it)....you could go with a Blade mCPX or Nano....these are very durable. Or you could get a larger heli( I learned on a Raptor 50) and just take baby steps and learn to fly. The simulator will be your best investment to start with. Hopefully some others will chime in....I'm sure there are those out there that can give you some advice on the cam part of it and what it takes to get good pictures of your neighbors(just kidding).....Good Luck!! Hey...when you learn you may end up scrapping the cam and getting into 3D!!

Thanks, I have been moving fast since I posted.

I ordered a toy Esky nano to get kind of orientated (the training wheels).

Knowing I will be wanting to move up I started shopping for a larger outdoor wind capable heli and lurked some classifieds. WoW!

I found a brand new Walkera V400D02 RTF new, never even charged the batteries for $150.00! Must have been a Christmas present or something, brand spanking new!

Hitting the simulators, watching videos, acquiring the spare parts and must do mods, (metal gear servos, motor heat sinks, batteries, micro tools, etc, etc) its gonna be a ball!

I like how you say you started on an advanced machine. I will have hours on a sim before I attempt a hover. I like some of the training vids and how the baby steps have you sliding it around on the ground on the training balls. I'm gonna love it.

I am a retired machinist so I love this stuff.

Depending on the helicopter you end up buying, you may have options to buy additional battery packs. Additonal battery packs allow you to quickly change packs and get back in the air. Having said that, typical flight time will vary depending on a lot of factors, but usually slow and easy flight can reach 8 to 15 minutes depending on battery capacity. Charging time is also dependent on battery capacity, but by definition is 1hour per battery pack. You will have to balance the voltage on the packs (assuming lipo batteries) so that could take an additional 20 minutes. That is MY average charging time 1:20.

If you have enough packs, you could be flying "indefinitely" in 8 to 15 minute increments, and charging the packs as you go along. Once you get your feet wet, you can learn about parallel charging and other tricks to "reduce" charging time. I put reduce in quotation marks because you really do not reduce the time, you just chrage more than one pack at a time with one charger. This is all assuming you want maximum life out of your batteries. there are some people adjusting the chargers and fast charging lipo batteries at 2 to 5 times the capacity. that reduces charge times to only 20 minutes at the cost of reduced battery total cycles.

Hope this helps a bit. You have a long road ahead, if you want to use this as a tool. Word of Caution. The FAA is clamping down hard on ALL commercial uses of hobby grade vehicles (Now known as small Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (sUAV)). And you are proposing a commercial use for this vehicle. DO NOT get the hobby side of the equation in trouble, PLEASE.

Rafael

I personally dont feel that a standard heli is a good camera platform.  Just too much vibration, IMO.  Not to say it cant be done...but you will have your work cut out for you to find a mount that has good enough shock absorbtion to make any video worth using.

A better camera platform would be a quad or pent or hex copter.  They dont have the vibration associated with most boom/pod style helis and can carry more payload and are easier to keep in control of for slow or even faster moving video.

If you are talking about a 500 size heli to just fly and not use as a camera platform, disregard what I said just now.  But if you are looking for a camera platform...id go with at least a larger quad copter.  And Rafael brings up a good point about the hobby and unmanned aircraft.  Please take that into consideration too.  Just because you can do something, doesnt automatically mean you should.
