After 3 years of getting out of 1/8th scale buggy and truggy racing a few local tracks have popped up here in Oklahoma and they all cater to short course racers. Now, 3 years ago SC trucks were just starting to appear at our tracks in Colorado but i never paid attention since it was never my cup of tea. To make a long story short, i sold ALL my truggy and buggy stuff and made the move down here to Oklahoma to where i'm gonna have to get ALLLLL new stuff again.

Now for the question, given my history of buggy racing i want a 4x4 SC truck. Now i have seen that AE, Losi and Traxxas are pretty much dominating the local SC scene but since our little season hasn't really started back up yet i don't have many people to ask opinions on what truck is better. I have a maximum spending limit of $500 (i know, i hate these threads too) for either a kit and everything for it or a good RTR.

I really like the AE SC10 4x4 LiPo combo on Tower or Amain.

But, i have been looking at the Slash as well (although i'm not a huge Traxxas fan)
http://www3.towerhobbies.com/cgi-bin/wti0001p?&I=LZ1011**&P=ML

And last but not least, the Losi Ten-SCTE 4WD, i LOVE Losi and that's what my brand was in the buggy and truggies.
http://www.amainhobbies.com/product_info.php/cPath/1_44_1785_2599_2601/products_id/213058/n/Losi-TEN-SCTE-1-10-Scale-4WD-RTR-Short-Course-Truck-w-DX3E-Radio-System

Also, with the new 2.4ghz radios is it necessary for me to get another Spektrum setup? I had a DX3R before and loved it so i'd like to get either the DX3E or DX3S for now but if the stock radio in the RTR's can get me through until next summer than that would be awesome.

When i say i need everything i mean i either sold or gave everything away, so i'll be starting from scratch again. I would like a RTR with a LiPo charger, so if you can help with some advice then please help!!! Thanks in advance and I appreciate everything guys, you haven't failed to help me in the last few years i've been here.

This should fit your bill. Happy racing!

i looked into them but they say the ProLine is the "sport" model and can't really compete with race spec trucks. How do they hang with the more expensive and higher-end trucks?

They should hang OK, it depends on the types of tracks; tight; then it will kick butt. Long; then it will be outrun. If you would decide to get a kit and raise your budget about 100 dollars, you can make something so powerful, people will be envious of it. I have personal experience with this setup and have beat about 5 team drivers in 1 race.

I don't use that charger and batteries, but they are close to what i use.

awesome, that's the stuff i wanna hear man. I'll try and raise my limit, not sure how the wife will feel about that but she's the one who talked me back into racing.

if i decided to go with just an RTR, how do you feel about the Associated SC10 4x4 RTR LiPo Combo? It's right at my budget and has everything i need...but i'm really skeptical of RTR's and i prefer kits. Although, i never had good luck with OFNA's in the buggy world.

I feel that all Associated RTR or kits are great cars. I really like my B4.1. OFNA SC trucks are very sturdy. We have a triple, with about 5 feet between jumps at our track, and I have overshot it many times and even cased it on the pipe. The only problem i had ever had was a ball cap pop off.

Found some rollers locally:

http://oklahomacity.craigslist.org/tag/3515912360.html

And i found some RTR's

http://dallas.craigslist.org/dal/tag/3513894273.html
http://dallas.craigslist.org/mdf/tag/3507507839.html

The wife is trying to talk me into just getting the brand new RC10 LiPo bundle off of Amazon. I'm gonna see what local hobby shops have but if anyone (or just Collector, lol) can give those Craigslist ads a look over and give me an opinion i'd highly appreciate it.

Thanks again, Collector, for the help...i've been looking into that setup you posted and i think if i build a kit i'm gonna look into that one.

Sorry it took me some time, but this looks to be the best roller;  http://oklahomacity.craigslist.org/tag/3424343028.html

Your LHS will steer you in the right way, but the RC10 LiPO combo is probably pretty good.

My buddy sold me his SCTE roller for $150 and i got a DX2S + S300 for $60! For $210 i couldn't have asked for a better deal...so since i have $290 left in my budget, i think i'm gonna go with the Toro 4600KV brushless w/Toro ESC or Hobbywing Xerun combo. All the reviews i've looked up said this motor and ESC is great for the price BUT i really want a Tekin RX8 with Tekin Pro4 4600...but the price on that thing would make me go over budget and i still need a 2s or 3s, charger AND a servo.

here's the Toro.

here's the Hobbywing Xerun.

That hobbywing xerun system is for 1/8 buggies/truggies and monster trucks. I have that system in my thunder tiger mt4 g3 1/8 monster truggy.

You don't want that much in a 4wd 1/10 sct. you might want this though:

everyone here runs 1/8th scale ESC's and 3800kv or 4600kv motors because it gets up to 105*f - 120*f or hotter outside depending if we're racing on cement or dirt and 1/10th scale ESC's overheat if we run at any of local outdoor track. Most guys get their 4600's at about 180*f to 200*f, if they run a 1/10th scale ESC then something is gonna melt. That Toro and the Xerun are some of the most recommended ESC/motor combo's for under $150 BUT i've heard that Toro has crappy customer service but the Xerun is supposed to be ok...i've already looked into the one you've posted, it's actually on my top 10 list

here's the new esc/motor combo i'm looking at:
