I am working on a low wing skimmer that shows to use a 1/8 inch dowel piece for the joiner.
it seems weak and not sure I understand how to attach it. I guess I know I should glue it but just seems like it wouldn't be strong enough.
There is a 1/8 inch piece of balsa on each elevator. Do I glue these to the elevator?
Sorry but instruction not so good and limited knowledge of assemble has left me questioning next steps.

the elevators are glued to the dowel. the elevators are hinged and the dowel just transmits the movement from one side of the elevator to the other. only one side will have a clevis attachment to hook up a pushrod, the elevators are hinged to the horizontal stabilizer, no glue at the dowel to the horizontal stabilizer. some other models will use a metal joiner, but the wood ones work just fine. simply make sure that you use something to ensure that the 2 halves of the elevator remain flat while the glue to the dowel is drying.

I'd be tempted to make a 1/8" wire joiner "U" shaped and epoxy it to the two halves.

I thought about doing this but the material is only 1/8 inch thick so to drill and insert would need to be something less than an 1/8th. That wouldn't be strong enough so wil need to stick with the stick.

The wood dowel should work fine. I used that same setup on a Phaeton 90 biplane. It was still joined after plowing into the ground 5 years later. My Rascal 110 is done the same way (arf). Its about 9 years old with lots of air time.

Well you wouldn't even have to drill, just cut a slot and epoxy it with slow set epoxy. Make some 1/64 ply plates over those slots and it'll never come apart there. Glue it all together over a flat surface, on plastic.

Goldber Piper Cubs elevators are joined this way, I build one with a cliped wing about 17 years ago, I flew that Cub hard some times, the joiner still glued on to the elevators.

I think the original design as shown on the plans is just fine. I would glue the dowel to the elevator halves with slow set epoxy over a flat board covered in plastic, making sure it is straight and flat. Those 1/8 strips are the leading edge for the elevators, glued to the front of the elevator halves, on either side of the dowel, making one continous line that you will hinge. This is one of those don't try to over engineer something that is already just fine.

After thinking about it some more, I remember the first time I did this method I drilled small holes and used round tooth picks to pin the dowel to the elevator. Just for a warm fuzzy. Turned out in later builds it really wasnt necessary.

Thanks for the replies. Telling me about how to glue it up really helps... That's where I had some concerns and the epoxy was my thinking too.

Dowel joiners will give way eventually..not if.. but when. IF you go with that setup.. .it's best to take some very light fiberglass cloth and clam shell the dowel to the elevators. Significantly increases strength. What will happen eventually is the side with the horn will push or pull and other side due to weakening over time will give way and the plane will go into a spiral

Considering the plane, a low wing Skimmer, I just don't think the flight demands on that elevator warrant much more reinforcement, but a wrap of light fiberglass would insure extra strength and reliability. Be sure the dowel is straight grained and solid. The weight of a fiberglass wrap is insignificant. What could happen is the balsa could crack along the grain, just beyond the dowel joint, and cause failure. A light fiberglass wrap glued around that joint would greatly enhance the strength of the joint. I think even a strip of Silkspan glued over the joint might be enough.

So I would be in agreement with KitBuilders suggestion.

that's cool... just a suggestion... I have had them fail in the past and now they no longer do.. so I'm just posting from experience. My experiences have been bad, hence the post.
