And a lil more.......

Once I got the attachment points and shot trap figures out there were only 3 major areas to attack before paint and weathering, fabricating the elevation and depression mechanism, making all of the hatches functional, and making the conical shaped close in defense small weapons ports on the sides of the casemate.

For these I wanted to make one static (glued in its closed position) and the other will be open (with the plug hanging on it's chain). For this I would obviously need to scratchbuild the plug. This will be a little challenging, but I think the magic is in the details. The most challening part was the actual shape of the outter plug cap. It's round and a very shallow cone shape, and without a lathe I was wracking my brain trying to figure out the best approach to build this thing.

Looking at the rear of the Tiger I realized the brake access covers had a very similar shape to what I needed. It then dawned on me that 2 years ago a friend have given me an old Mattoro Sturm lower hull (shell only) just in case I might need it whenever I actually got around to this build. So I dug out that lower hull and my dremel and went to work.

Using a Sharpie I blackened out the area immediately around the part I was trying to save, just for clarity. The pics below show the progession, after cutting them out and trimming to shape and final size, the ports were sanded down to their final thickness (height) on a 100 grit sanding block. The one on the port side will be glued to the casemate in the closed position and the starboard one with get the rest of the plug built from styrene rod and sheet. More to follow on that little detail

And finally for tonight...
After much grinding, filing, sanding and test fitting, I was able to slowly creep up on making the rear hatch fit snuggly into it's tappered hole in the back of the casemate. Once I was happy with the fit I used a 0.50" dia drill bit to drill a hole through the hinges and the attachment block. Then added a short peice of 0.50" dia brass rod as a hinge pin. The door still needs to have a handle fabricated from brass wire, some internal details and a magnetic closure added.

I then spent the next 3 hours working the top loaders hatch. This proved to be a bit more difficult. The hatch is broken into 2 peices, the rear section with is hinged and the longer front section that sits under the lip of the hinged section is designed to lift completely off while the vehicle is being loaded. More on that hatch as well - tomorrow!

Okay boys n girls,
To break up the monotony and tediousness of all this grinding and filing, I spent this evening on a few cosmetic details. I guess I wanted to make a little progress in that arena so that I felt like it was getting closer.

Using the brake access cover I cut off the backplate of the Matorro Sturm, I set about making the close-in defense plug for the starboard side of the casemate. I superglued a shaft of 0.080"styrene rod to a piece of RenShape and chucked into my dremel. Esentially using it as a lathe, spinning the part against files and sanding sticks until I reached the final desired shape. I added a backing plate out of 0.030" thick styrene sheet turned the same way. Then after radiusing the end of the handle I added and end cap made like a washer using my punch and die set. Finally I drilled a small hole and inserted the retaining chain. Once its all painted up should look pretty cool!

Well folks,
As it seems is standard with most of the parts on this resin conversion set, the details on the loader's hatch, were just very soft and not well represented. The resin had a lot of pitting and voids, and the it seems nothing was very crisp or sharp, well at least not to my liking, so I sanded all of the detail off so that I had a smooth flat top surface but was able to retain the taper on the bottom side as it somewhat matches the taper on the hatch openings in the casemate.

I started by replacing all of the edge framing using 0.125"x0.030" styrene strip. To keep this as accurate as possible I used my chopper so that the corner joints were accurately potrayed at 45 degree miters (as opposed to butt joints). The hangrabs were bent out of 0.050" dia brass wire and superglued (CA) into holes drilled into the surface for good adhesion. The lifting lug was part of the cast white metal details included in the resin kit. I also added three small pieces of 0:040" styrene rod, I'm not exactly sure what they are but I have them in several referrence photos, so I added them. Finally I added the close in defense port on the hatch roof. This was made from another disc scavenged off of the Matorro rear plate, sanded to thickness, and chamfer added around the circumfrance and then the elyptical opening scriped in and 4 small bolts added.

It may not be perfect, but I htink it looks a lot better than the original parts and should read well after paint.

I remember this stage of MY Sturmtiger build.

It was one of the first projects I had to make a hatch "functional", as well as the rear hatch too.

Nice work so far!

Duane,
Thank you for sharing the pic. I actually do have it in one of the referrence books I'm using (German Late War Armored Fighting Vehicles - written by George Bradford, nd published by Stackpole Books). In fact that book has been open to that picture on my work bench from the first day I started this project.

Becasue that Sturm appears to be covered in a very light colored mud, a lot of details really standout - the connical shaped close-in defense plugs for example are easily seen in that photo, so it has helped a lot!

Thanks again!
Craig

sollie,
I keep pluggin away and the progress has felt painfully slow. I was seriously hoping to have this conversion built up in about 2 1/2 weeks, and it's already been 3, and I still have quite a bit to go. Oh well, in the end it will hopefully all be worth it!

Alrigth I feel a little silly for asking because it's probably really obvious, but you wrote "that photo started to pop up on FB to just now" But what is FB? he asked sheepishly (LOL) I know I'm gonna end up feeling stupid when I get your answer!

Panther F,
Thanks Jeff, now I know you said you only look at the pictures but I keep asking (I think this is the 3rd time in this thread), help me out brutha, I want to see pics of your Sturm or a link to the build thread. I believe this kit was either poured from the old Imperial molds, or the Imperial kit was purchased and new molds made from the cast parts.

Anything you can post would be appreciated!

Todd,
Thank you VERY much! See I told you I was gonna feel stupid! My brain didnt equate FB to Facebook, because I dont use it, I don't have an account and I don't want one! My wife and I both agreed our lives are so full and our free time so limited as it is now, adding social media outlets would only make it it worse........much worse! So I don't Facebook, Twitter, Linksus, Skype none of it - hell I don't even have a smart phone! I keep fighting it, but I think it's a losing battle (LOL).

Thank you for the offer on the lathe, I may need to take you up on it, if not on this project perhaps the next. But please don't let that slow you down if you have questions, reach out to me, and if we need to hook up on a weekend we can arrange that as well. That new lathe sure is purty!!

I think this build is moving along quite fast. Every morning I have a look on my fav tank forums ,and there is a new update on this build every so often :-)

Just a sidenote on the FB. I started to use it heavily, ore having a look everyday. I see no use in reading all the BS about what every other prson do, eating a cake, taking a swim, you know :-) But when I got the second tank twitch( I was out of it a few years) I now use it mainly to get in touch with other's that don't use forums that much, and some of the same that do :-) So you 'like' ore join a group, say World RC Tank Community, ore I like tnaks, ore tanks nuts. and then you get all kinds of cool pic's others post to that group that I have never seen before.
Like that sturm pic, ore some like these:

(sorry for clogging up the tread)

Well... no REAL build pics exist but due to your requests I'll throw a few down for ya.

STILL, a work in progress (as like a few others are) as I need to install the front fenders and add an ambush camo to the paint scheme which I derived from this image.

Oops... no I meant THIS image:

I'll use the ambush from the image above to add to later.

So there you go!

Yes... they are the WECHOE wheels. Thanks for reminding me as they were a giant PITA to work with as they were not poured on a level surface, prompting a lot of work.

I also found these photos too, which will probably be more interesting as they show how I attached the superstructure to the tank.

(like I said... you asked)

That's all I have as these photos were taken before I repainted it, so the color is different. This was the first resin conversion kit to work with in RC form so it's very basic and a little crude too but it functions just fine.

You can also see my crude late armored air intake too. That was changed when I repainted it with the SCHUMO cover.

Again... you asked!

Wow so for the price, would you in retrospect use the Mato steel wheels and convert the axles to fit the Tamiya Tiger I? The Wecho's are really expensive and if one has to do a lot of work to get them to work?

Thanks for the support, I'm glad someone is looking forward to reading this! But I think this is truly dragging out, havent been abel to work on it each day like I would prefer.

And no worries on clogging the thread I appreciate you sharing a side of FB I never considered! And thanks for posting the pics I especially love the couple sharing an RC tanking moment, cica 1969 (LOL)

Kindest regards,

Panther F,
Thank you, Thank you, Thank you!

Wow! First off, nice job on the Sturm, looks great! Secondly after seeing your pics I am thoroughly convinced the kit I have is a direct knockoff. It's almost identical to yours in every aspect and design except mine is much rougher and softer details. Exactly what you would expect if you had made molds from cast parts.

In fact becasue mine came with no instructions I couldnt figure out where the 2 "C" shaped pieces of white metal went, until I saw you photos and realized they were meant to be functional interior parts (Holding the ball mantlet in place) and not exterior cosmetic parts, seems so obvious now. Even your elevation design helped clarify things for me as well. They were greatly beneficial thank you again!

Hi all,
Been the better part of a week since I last posted, sorry for the delay - had house guests over the weekend, that combined with some OT at work and havent had much bench time over the last 4-5 days. Well at least not nearly as much as I would have like.

Spent most of the weekend fitting and engineering the ball mantlet and elevation unit, but more on that later. Just a few more details were added, nothing fancy, couple of the white metal parts that needed clean-up and some scratch built rear engine deck parts.

Added the anttenae base, which will ultimately get new weld detail, as will the armored visor over the driver's view port. Then I filled in some of the Tamiya kit's stock mounting holes. My method is really straight forward, I fill the hole with styrene rod or stretche sprue. this fills the hole completely, and because it's plastic I glue it in place with solvent, whci generally mean after it is sanded flush there is no need for filler and the "plug" dissapears under paint as if the hole was never there. (the picks below shoe the track cable locators holes filled with styrene rod and awaiting sanding to make them flush)

Finally using some 0.30" sheet styrene I made and new armored exhaust cover for the engine deck, after I pulled the fielfel air cleaners off of the back plate. I made brackets using some Plastruct angle iron, then sliced Evergreen Brand Hex Rod into thing wafers to replicate bolt detail. I also used styrene rod to fill the ar cleaner hose clamp holes, the made new deck grab handles from bent brass wire.

Alright guys,
I'm seeking some input on this one.

The kit barrel was rough, really rough, especially the gas vent ports around the circumfrance that are unique to this vehicle. The holes were of varying depth and not were round or evenly spaced, so I spent about 2 hours cleaning them up and driling them out, but they still didnt look right to me. Plus there is still alot of small air bubbles and voids in the resin, and it's such a visually prominent peice. The I realized that there is not enough holes and the ones that are there are too large in diameter.

So using my referrrence material I set about making a new face or top cap for the barrel. If I had a mill or a drill press, and an indexing head this would have been a slam dunk, but I dont have either so it wasn't!

Everything was first hand layed out in pencil the different colored inks, the 2 concentric grooves (missing on the kit part) were scribed in by hand using a circle template then the interior barrel opening was cut and ground to shape with a burr bit in the Dremel. Then all of the holes were center punched and drilled using a pin vise, then each hole was widened and then a champfer added using a small countersink held in my pin vise, and finally the outside diamater was cut and sanded. The cap was temporarliy attached to the barrel using double sided tape and sanded to match the contours of the resin cast barrel. This was another 4 hour project believe it or not

So before I grind the last 0.60" off of the end of the resin barrel to make room for this replacement, I was hoping to get some input. I'm not 100% happy with the effort but still thinks it looks more accurate then the resin cast peice. I've included a CAD drawing out of one of my books as referrence

So what do you think, should I leave the resin alone and call it good or install the new scratch built one, or completely start over on a new attempt? And you don't have to be kind, I'm asking for honest opinions here, I've already invested 6 hours in the end of this barrel and I'm still not thrilled with the results!

Thanks in advance for sharing your thoughts!

It's like a trip down memory lane Squid! Funny how much you forget until someone builds the exact same thing, all the challenges and hurdles to overcome on "how to". So I am reliving my build from 2006 with yours.

I like your armored intake cover but the Schumo piece is really worth checking into.

Keep up the great work.
