I'm looking at putting the Hobbico LiFe battery in as my RX battery to replace my 5cell NiMh to save some wieght and get more flights out of a single charge. My question is, will running that particular battery cause harm to any of my electronics with the voltage remaining higher on a full charge for long than the NiMh does?

The LiFe will only be around 0.2 volts higher than the NiMh at full charge. If the servos didn't have trouble with the NiMh they should be OK with the LiFe..

I've had A123's in two of my planes for over a year now. No
problem with my Futaba 2.4 system using futaba and hitech
servos. The A123's top off at 7.2/7.3 volts, but quickly drop
to around 6.9 volts and stay there for quite some time.
Just check the amount of milliamps you out back in after 1 flight,
then after 3 flights. This way you can estimate the amount of
miiliamps you consume per flight. Any new planes I get in the
future will use A123's/LiFe batteries.

I think LiFe's will replace NiMh's as the first upgrade from NiCd's as time goes on. If a pilot is going to have to buy a smart charger anyway, they are the way to go for sure.

Hi!
All receivers that I know of (Spektrum, JR ,Futaba) can handle 7V or more without problems! It's another matter with the servos.
I am a bit cautius when it comes to using servos that only can handle 4,8V on a 2cell LiFe pack. Servos that can handle 6V probably arn't a problem though.
I have crased a Q-500 racer (twice) due a to faulty 4,8V Graupner JR servo (digital)on the aileron where I used a 2cell 850mah LiFe battery.
If the crasches where due to the servo itself or because I used too much voltage I don't know. The label on the servo specificly said 4,8V!
The plane was repairable in both cases.

Using an LiFe is just like using a 6v NiCd from all practical purposes, so you're right- a servo rated for 4.8v only will eventually burn up or glitch with a 2 cell LiFe.

Most modern servos can handle 6v and should be rated in the mfg spec sheet. If not you can add a voltage regulator for around $25

You don't even need a regulator. A step down diode made for helicopter tail servos will get the job done for less than $10. That said, if you're using servos that are so old that they can't handle 6v then you probably should skip the fancy stuff and get something current.

I will be using HiTec 7966 & 7975 servos which are rated at 6v and found that the AR8000 that I'll be using is rated all the way to 9.4v.

I found this http://www.horizonhobby.com/products/avionics-life-rx-4100mah-6-6v-30c-w-2mm-gold-conn-ORI60506 battery to put in place of the Hobbico one because the Hobbico doesn't have the required discharge rate that I ended up needing for running the digital servos. I also like to over build for safety reasons and I think this will match what I need nicely.

Thanks everyone for the replies.

Want some free advice? Dont mess with off brand LiFe batteries. Get genuine A123's

I get mine from WrongWayRC.com TailDraggerRC.com has them as well.

Wrongway will put heavy duty wires and whatever connectors you want on them.

The Avionics pack I put a link to is made by Team Orion which is huge in the car/buggy racing. They make quality products from I've seen and they use high quality 20awg silicone wire with gold contacts. A123 packs suffer from lack of capacity; largest one I've seen was 2300mah. I know A123 are technically better than the waffer type I'm looking at because they're more tolerant of vibrarions. But I've been digging into it and it seems that as long as you use foam to encase the battery and aren't useing an extremely rough running engine then you are fine.

Kinda off topic but I figured I'd ask anyway, where can I get balance lead extensions for the hobbico life batteries I'm using the 10c 3200 pack and on this particular plane had to mount it aft of the rx tray down in the bottom to get my cg right , problem is I'm going to have to use some heavy duty velcro to get it to stay put and it's going to be a bear to get out and connect to the balance board on my charger.
I looked all over Towers site but didn't see anything there, I guess if all else fails I can cut and solder extensions but really don't want to go that route if I don't have to.
