I just received my Hitec X2-400. The charger is capable of putting out 20 amps of current for charging. The cables that go from the charger to the battery are 18 gauge wire. Seems a bit small to me?  Are they capable of supporting the full 20 amp charge rate?

Maybe those are the balance wires rather than the main lead? Most main leads are at least 14 gage.

No they are indeed the wires that attach to the battery. One red, one black. It says 18awg on the side of the wires. Would you suggest making my own charge wires or contacting Hitec and asking them this question?

Depending upon which chart you use and the material and strand count , they may be just fine. At 20 amps 18 gage will probably warm up somewhat , but the worst thing might just be an artificial voltage increase read by the charger. I know I do 30 amps thru 14 gage and it's fine for < 7 minutes.

One chart I have shows 18 gage doing 16 amps for chassis wiring and 2.3 amps for power transmission. I would have trouble with it for sure because of the voltage drop.

Thanks for the advice, I actually dropped an email to Hitec asking this question and they said its fine and there is nothing to worry about.  Very timley response from them, I am impressed.

For 18 AWG, a chart I have says: Max current @ 75 CM/A = 21.654A

How often are you going to need the full 20A for charging your pack(s)? For 1C charge rate, that is ten 2000mAh packs at once.

I will possibly need 15 amps for a 3c charge rate on a 5000 mAh 6s battery.  I don't plan on charging at a 3C rate all the time but I bought that charger because if its capabilities to do so.  My main concern is safety obviously. I just don't need to burn the house down, wouldn't want my helicopter harmed.

A link or a picture of that chart would be awesome if you could post. Thanks

http://www.powerstream.com/Wire_Size.htm  indicates 16 amps for chassis wiring but I imagine that might be for a few feet??
