Status: offline 		Hi all.. hoping you with experience will chime in...

I have been sitting on a DLE30 for 4 months trying to find the appropriate warbird for it.. walked into my LHS and saw a BH Macchi C.200 on clearance...

I blew all my hobby $$$'s for the next several months... I don't have money for new servos... I need 8 for this plane...

Interestingly.. I have a box full of Futaba S3003 servos from previous lawndart victims...

Do you think those simple S3003's would be enough for a 30cc warbird? (I'd be running them on dual 2200MAh 6v reciever packs.. Airtronics 2.4 6 channel rcvr...)

what other details do you need?

Also.. as an aside... In recent magazines there was an ad for Dymond RC (www.rc-dymond.com) with really torquey servo for $20 (http://www.rc-dymond.com/index3.php?productID=2027). I could afford $160 for all the servos but not $40 or $50/servo. There was also a thread somewhere that said HobbyPartz.com was a good idea too...

Looking for specific recommendations please.. (i.e. this servo for ailerons and buy it here... this servo for this and buy it here... etc)

Status: offline 		JR makes the DS 821 servo for $30, digital, BB, 88oz. torque, .15 sec@6v. In my experience the best centering servo below $50. you can often find them NEW on ebay for $80-$90 for 4 of them. Horizon even markets a HV version now for the same $30 price.
similar story for the Futaba 3152, (though I haven't used them) they sell for about $80 for 4 on fleabay even though tower has them for $35 apiece.(they must come stock with radios because people are always dumping them cheap)
so shop around and be patient, it can save you some money, even on new equipment!

Status: offline 		listings for 4 futaba 3152 servos, I would use these over 3003's on all flight surfaces (digital, twice the torque on 6v, bb output shaft)
you want digital servos on the flaps to prevent blowback, and better than standard servos on ailerons and elevator for sure on a 30cc model

Status: online 		3152's or hitech 645 MG!! But if you can try to afford just little more $$ try not to skimp on the servos.. They are one of the weakest links.. New gasser plane 30cc Would hate to see it go in from the use of a good servo! Just my 2c..

..Agreed. I have 4 of them on the ailerons of a midwest super stinker with a moki 1.35. I couldn't justify more expensive servos for the ailerons when I needed 4 of the buggers, and I'm not dissapointed.

Status: offline 		JR says the DS 821 should be used on anything bigger than a 120 sized plane... granted 30cc is close but not that close... this plane will be somewere in the 13lbs range all up.

Status: offline 		I have used Hitec 645s on everything but throttle on my 30cc planes. Never had an issue (KOW). They are great analogs and you can buy them brand new for less than $30 ea. on Ebay.

Status: offline 		thanks everyone... found a vendor in New York that will sell me 6 Hitec 5645 digital for $199.95 and one Hitec 645 analog (throttle) for $26.. .free shipping... woot!!! It's more than i wanted to spend but better safe than having to watch the plane pancake when the elevator servo goes.

Status: offline 		I think those 3003 servos would be all you need. You can buy an update case top for about $10/servo that has a ball bearing on the output.
I think we have gone overboard on torque requirements. I have flown digital systems since 1966. For years we had nothing anywhere near as powerful as a 3003.
You would be surprised how little torque is required if you are not doing those "cat thrown in the air" 3D maneuvers.
With those digital servos make sure you have adequate battery power. They have a microprocessor in them that can suffer brownout.

Status: online 		See now that's how I know.. Yes they will work for normal flying buti wouldn't do much maybe a few rolls.. That's a huge maybe. I had a friend that used ems bb conversions on 148 servos, it lasted for awhile. Wasn't long until his right elevator froze in the down position. Sorry to say the plane didn't have a chance,

Status: online 		The real kicker was I had to help him pickup all the parts. He then sent the engine and radio gear home with me. So I took all the bad servos apart and was very surprised that all of them were S148's only 3 survived. But I will say this I know a guy that has been flying an old Midwest extra! With a zenoah 45 in it. He is still using all 148's as well. But he just flys it scale like.

Status: offline 		I think you're on to something fundamental, Warbird72... I'm guessing that if you don't stress a sub-par electronic device then it may well last for a very long time... but I can tell you from experience that the cheaper the computer-server component the higher likelyhood it'll fail when it's under strain...

I won't be flying my warbird 3D but I do expect the servos to work normally when I pull full elevator to get me out of trouble. I'm not a big fan of high-rate control surfaces but I've been mixing the curve on my elevators for a very long time... I trust my thumbs most of the time but I need to know that the servos will be there when i need it!

Status: offline 		Another option is Solar servos from Nitroplanes.com.  Their D227 is rated at 152 oz torque(187 @ 6.0V), and it's metal gear.  Not the fastest servo in the world, but at $10 each... and you're not flying 3D.  http://www.nitroplanes.com/33p-solarservo-d227.html

I know, I know, it's not JR, or Futaba, or Hitec....  I probably wouldn't risk a $5000 plane with them, but hey, I can't afford a $5000 plane either....I just bought 6 of these, and they are going in my DF Super Decathlon.  We'll see how well they work.  I haven't read any bad reviews so far.  Just another option.

I've used Dymond RC servos in the past and have several planes with Dymond's D5000 MG servos in them now. I have never had any problems with them except once when I got some jitter in one. It turned out to be a bad extention wire. Dymond RC has been around since the 90's maybe longer so they must be doing something right.

I tend to agree. However I dont know if the nylon in the gears in servos these days is as good as it used to be. For years I ran 148 futabas in some very large planes and even in crashes never broke a gear. I have broke gears in newer servos under conditions that have really suprised me.. Ie they shouldn't have broken. 645 are a good servo. I am running these now hitec 5496mh $34 each metal gears. Will see how they hold up in the long run.

Why would you fly a warbird any other way than scale like?

Status: offline 		I think a servo with more than 100 oz. Of torque on a 13lb warbird would be overkill. Small control surfaces and minimal throws on a scale plane here, people.
What I would want is a name brand servo with reliability that has BB's and better torque than a standard servo. That can be had for the OP's originally stated budget. For me Metal Gears are not required here, the flight loads don't warrant it. I have several JR 8411sa servos on 25 percent size 3D planes and they perform well, the gears stay tighter longer and they weigh less. The only way I've ever seen a nylon gear strip on a name brand servo is in a crash or on something like a aileron if it bangs the runway on a bad landing... my 2c.
