It really depends on the type of vehicle and what you run it on.

Let's say you run an RC10B4 on a track, a 10" drop should bottom out (as you are concerned with traction and cornering and the chassis slapping on landing from jumps isn't going to cause real damage).

Are the shock pistons stock?  Are you running maximum droop?

Its all stock, and yes its max droop. I turned in those screws just enough to take pressure off the shock.

Set the suspension to give you the best traction on the track, don't worry about bottoming out, it should not factor at all in your suspension setup, these cars are designed to slap on landing.

do not try to stiffen the shocks to stop the bottoming out, that will result in damage to the machines suspension.... bottoming out is normal and how these machines absorb impacts..... Skidplates will help save the chassis, but will result in the skidplates catching on the lips of the jumps..I prefer to run my truggies bare and replace the chassis when it wears..I hate the handling of my truggy with a skidplate....

I'm new to the idea of skid plates, I've only got them on my 5ive. And it's a no brainer to save a $220 part with a $25 part.

I'm keen to know more bad points about them on 1/8 scale because I've been eyeing them off for my 8ight

When u say it was catching on the lip of jumps, I instantly think some minor suspension tweaks could stop that.?
I totally inderstand u don't want it bottoming out going up the jumps, say if the op was to run a chassis saver and tweaked the suspension would u even notice the slight loss of traction when bashing?

Not a subject worthy of discussoin since it costs only $20 to try and see for yourself how your car feels with a skid plate on it I don't use them either.

Fair enough
I do consider them a must on stake parks, that stuff is worse than a 30grit sandpaper.

Bashing I would consider using skidplates...on a track I would not

you can adjust the chassis, but then you suffer other ill effects from the stiffened suspension...the cars just handle more predictably with no skidplates......the bottom of the chassis acts like a snowboard....their ability to glide makes them handle good even if they bottom out...as soon as you put a skidplate there you now take away the chassis ability to glide easilly .... which means every time you bottom out your skidplate is digging in, and on a truggy part of what makes them handle so good is the ability to bottom out and not lose forward momentum.....where a MT would get get bucked ass over tea kettle the truggy will just glide right over.........that is untill you add skidplates tot he bottom...then the truggy no longer wants to glide nearly as easily....
