Hey Guys,

I'm new to the RC world. I picked up a few old T-maxx (pro .15's) and a new traxxas rustler xl-5. The t-maxxs have given me loads of trouble so I am concentrating on the electric one until this weather cuts me a break.

The platform is an almost new Traxxas Rustler XL-5 (Titan 12T motor). My Planned mod list is as follows:

  • Traxxas Wheelie Bar
  • Better wheels/Tires
  • EZ-RUN 9T
  • EZ-RUN 35A
  • VXL Steel Idler
  • VXL Steel Differential
  • RPM Front Bumper
  • Venom 50C 11.1V 5000mAh 3S LiPo

Thoughts? Suggestions? What can I expect in terms of speed and parts breaking?

with the ezrun you CAN run a 3s lipo. I suggest sticking to 2s tho, if you plan to do offroading.
If you are aiming to drive fast on pavement, the 3s will be OK. But 3s on that system for offroading is really pushing it.

If your rustler has a gray chassis, then it may already have the steel trans gears. Id open the case and check before shelling out the money for new gears.

The venom lipos are decent. But ive been using skylipo 2s and 3s 5000mah packs from hobbypartz.com. WAY cheaper packs. Only thing is they come with banana 4.0mm plugs...so you will need to put traxxas plugs on them. But the 2s packs are under $30 and the 3s are $40-$50. The Gens Ace brand on that site are also good.

You will have to either buy the battery expansion kit, or mod the battey bars to fit lipo packs.

Tires, plenty of good ones out there. Really depends on what kinda surface you wanna run on.

RPM bearing carriers (front and rear) are also good. Well, every RPM part is good for the rustler.

You can mod the slider drive shafts to make them stronger by filing the inside of the male shaft with apoxy(helps keep it from twisting and snapping.)

For 2 or 3s, a good slipper setup is important. To tight, you will break driveshafts often. Too loose, and the slipper will heat up and it will begin to slip when it shouldnt.

Pretty well covers the rustler. Its an easy truck to work on, fairly durable stock, crazy tough with lots of RPM parts.

Oh, alloy shock caps are a must!!!

Wow, thanks for the useful information. Any idea what I may be looking at in terms of speed?

I can't tell if my spur (?) is steel or hardened plastic. Here's a pic:

That's the plastic spur gear in the new style slipper clutch.

Also I would recommend pro-line protrac slash 2WD a-arms instead of RPM. More mounting holes and better triangulation between the members in the rear a-arms. To add to what nitrosportsandrunner said, RPM gear covers are fully sealed, and now they are releasing a whole tranny housing.

Here: http://scriptasylum.com/rc_speed/top_speed.html The Diff Ratio is 1, and the the Transmission Ratio is 2.6. You should be able to fill in the rest. Look at a manual for the Motor Resistance and the Current Draw. (Or the ESC and Motor manual)

With the newer style slipper its almost a sure thing that there are metal gears in the trans.
