UW 3000 fabric for a runway - 1/4/2013 2:08 AM

Status: offline 		I wanted to see if any one has tried using a woven fabric called UW 3000 for a runway And if so how long has it lasted.
This is a ground cover fabric used by landscapers

This is an article that was published in Model Aviation when we built our runway from fabric material. Our runway material was donated to us and was 3 years old when we got it, and we are now starting our 6th year of using it. The material is still holding up very well and I don't foresee us having to replace it within the next 3-5 years. 

I totally love flying from this material. IMHO it's the best of both worlds between a paved runway and a grass runway. The surface is smooth like a paved runway, but not hard on your airplane like grass is. I can't recommend it highly enough. I won't go into the details of our putting the material down because it is covered in the article. But we got it down in a weekend and it's not hard to do. the only thing I can say that we did wrong is that we didn't put in enough work in preparing the ground underneath it. Make sure you have the ground underneath the material is level and all the bumps are removed.

Status: offline 		After having a different kind of fabric than Geotex for the last few years we are in a position to update our runway. Like Ken mentioned flying from a fabric runway is awesome. But ours has suffered from UV and had a few too many massive failures.

I would like to join the OP in a request for information but from clubs that have used old conveyor belts laid out.

Status: offline 		So here are the links to the 2 fabrics. The US 230 Aeromodeling Geotextile is a 15 x 300 roll is 900.00 a roll and the UW 3000 is 461.00 for a 40 x 120 roll.
I wanted to see if the UW 3000 would last as long as the US 230 Aeromodeling Geotextile and if anyone has has used it. I will read the specs and see what the difference
is

Status: offline 		I can tell by the pic it is not the same stuff we used. Ours did not have that much shine to it. I have the spec sheet for ours at the house. It shows the tensile strength, UV rating, and other specs like the web site you linked. I'll dig it out and post a pic of the specs so you can compare. If I have not done it in a day or two, please email or PM as a reminder.

Todd; You need to see if you can get a sample of each product so you can physically compare them to each other and to other products that you come across; what did the Georgetown Club Use, get their feedback, they have had their's for several years now?

Status: offline 		I'll be calling for a sample of US 230 this week. It looks pretty good.

We spent all day cutting off our destroyed fabric. The guys all worked very hard. We were able to patch a decent enough area back togeather for a small take off and landing patch. We will most likely use it for take off and just land in the grass.

Status: offline 		Years back a different club I belonged to at the time did a fabric runway with a fabric used to go down before paving a road. We did a 60' x 600' runway. Its like flying off of cushioned linoleum. BUT, the drawback is that it can be damaged by prop strikes. I hear they use composite roofing material to and cold tar to patch it. Its still going after about 6 years.

Status: offline 		If you are looking for an alternative to pavement or fabric, check out a product called Soiltac. I used in on my runway about 8 years ago and it's still holding up great without even a crack.
