Im looking to purchase a new jet here in the next couple of months and cant decide on what one I should get.. If there was a big price difference it would make the decision easyer but they are close in price.. I started out wanting the T-38 but got a quote on the 1/7 F-18F and they are too close... I was all for the T-38 but with the F-18F close in price I feel like Im getting more jet for price... I have seen the T-38fly and it looks like it flys great.. I haven't seen the new honey comb material F-18F fly so Im interested if it flys the same as the first ones ie jumps off on take off and heavy on landing... The videos of the 1/6 F-18F look like it flys takes off and lands great but that's the bigger one so Im interested to see if the lighter version 1/7 flys the same...

Help me decide guys

david

My opinion: F-18 is like the Honda Civic of jets. Everyone has/had one. T-38 is more interesting because you don't see them very often. Really impossible to compare these two as it comes down to personal preference and they fly very different.

Maybe because they crash on the first flight

I was referring to the T-38s in general being rare, but your comment made me LOL! Interesting indeed!

I have seen the F-18 1/7 scale it flies very nice, seems to land very stable and I didnt see any bad things about it. EDFJim can give you some good info on it.

I have had two f18f models, both were fun but I would love to try a T38. I have waiting to find a "good " one.
I think it would be a fun plane and it certianly is not like showing up with a Hawk...

Good luck
Dave

Dub,
Very few F-18's out this way on the South/East Coast...unlike CA. Not one F-18 flying in either of the clubs I have been affiliated with right now. Kind of weird since they do fly well.

Either airframe is a good one, IMO.

Im planning to change that but I will not be back in the south till after my deployment. Moving to New York soon and hope to go back to Savannah after I get back, but will still be about 2 years total.

I think the F18F has a habit of leaping off the ground due to its aerodynamic design and the geometry of its landing gear.....they were designed to stick to the deck of a carrier and do so very well, so they are difficult to smoothly "unstick" also. I don't think it will matter what manufacturer's F18F you buy it will be similar in that regard. The F18C rotates much more smoothly. I have and fly both. I think Raff will say the same and he too has flown both.

In short, I would not expect much difference in the takeoff performance of their new F18F.

@Rex: Interesting that they are not as common in the south. The Hawk is like that on the west coast.

@Fender: By the time you finish the F-14, F-15, and then a F-18, FEJ will release a 1/4 F-18.

@Craig: that is my experience as well. Raf says the F model rotates much better with max flap. My C model was fairly smooth as you stated.

I disagree completely! Have owned and flown the Tam F-18F as well as the FEJ F-18F and NEVER had a problem with them leaping off the ground. Properly CG'd and correct takeoff technique and they rotate smooth as silk. I have also watched EDF Jim fly his newer FEJ Super Hornet at BITW and it didn't leap off the ground on takeoff either.

Tam F-18F SuperHornet video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-ph0OSwPbvo&list=FLM8qr9hMEfkJ2JzD3Dvi-Ew&index=31

FEJ 1/7 F-18F video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZeCqfZP9H6U&list=FLM8qr9hMEfkJ2JzD3Dvi-Ew&index=2 This is the older heavier version. Newer, lighter version should perform even better.

FEJ 1/7 F-18F on grass: Takeoff at 3:40 perfectly smooth http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=APBf3fY_p0E&list=FLM8qr9hMEfkJ2JzD3Dvi-Ew

All of the Super Hornets that I've witnessed leaping off the ground were not using enough flap on take off. As David stated, if set-up properly they rotate smoothly.

Well I thought about that LOL I dont think the a bigger one would be able to meet the AMA weight, but I wouldn't put it past FEJ to do it .
That being said I would like to see maybe some improvements and larger sizes on their current stuff. Would love to have a 120ish tornado or the new yak in a size like that. Then again after seeing the large hawk, I may have to switch projects.

I have both and the T38 is the one. It is 200+ with a 30 lbs class motor. Can fly in cross winds. Go home in a cross wind with the F18 unless you like rebuilding wind tips every flight. However the F18 is a blast to fly when the wind is down the runway. Maybe you need both!!!!!!!!!! Start with T38 then the F18

I like the looks of the T-38. A timeless and graceful design, I am going to get the Skymaster if I can get my Comp-Arf Corsair sold....

I've always wanted a T-38 Talon. But the F-18 is nice also.

OK, I think you have to feel it. What is the right jet for me ? It doesn't matter how many Honda Civic a jet has ;-)
