I am working on a ZipKit Rockett that was started by someone else...The initial assembly wasn't up to my standards so it was disassembled a bit so I could correct a few things. The build is on track now and the epoxy should be completely cured on the sponsons by the time I get home from work tomorrow. I have a few questions about some changes...

1) Nothing major here...as I build the boat I can't keep from wanting to do some things that will make it look more scale. One possible scheme I would like to do is the Miss Madison (there are other possibilities) with an exposed Allison engine. This particular Hydroplane had a pointed bow. Do you think that adding this feature would have any negative impact on performance. I wouldn't think that it would...just want some reassurance.

2) I struggled with the rear chines...just couldn't get them to fit right. After ruining a few pieces of wood, out came the plane and the bar sander and now they will be epoxied in a more traditional way. Need some ideas on clamping!

3) Would replacing the 1/8" ply with 1/16 be an issue on the chines, top deck or top sponsons? If I choose to model a boat that has an exposed wooden deck, the poplar ply will need to go.

Thanks....

Hi!! I have built a couple Zippkits BULLITTS.. all of the hull constriction was done with thin ca and kicker.. i clamped straightedge to bottom and braced sides with straight pieces of wood and glued that way to keep straight,,, an extra set of hands would have been nice!! after gluing with ca, I then epoxied all joints from the inside.. maby the change in plans were to make this part of asembly easier...?? I wouldnt make any parts thinner because of the rigors of a gasser engine!.. as for the bow, I cant imagine it would be any effect on performance.. note that rocket and bullitt models needed up to a pound of lead in nose to get correct C/G... I put weight in lower sections of sponsons before top sheeting. Not sure if any of this is any help,I hope so.. also small clamps, paper binders, big bar clamps rubberbands and tape are your friends...(Quote from bullitt manual) If you have any more questions message me or I hang out on this forum @ RE:CENTRAL NY BOATERS... we are on page 145 i think and there are several zippkits fans and also Joe Petro (The Zippkits MAN!!) chatting there..good luck and dont be shy...

Do you think that adding this feature would have any negative impact on performance. I wouldn't think that it would...just want some reassurance. Won't be an issue as it will add less than half an inch to the total length, very little weight and shouldn't change the aerodynamics enough to cause any adverse affects
2) I struggled with the rear chines...just couldn't get them to fit right. After ruining a few pieces of wood, out came the plane and the bar sander and now they will be epoxied in a more traditional way. Need some ideas on clamping! Two words: MASKING TAPE. If you wrap it tightly around the hull, it will work fine, been putting boats together that way for years
3) Would replacing the 1/8'' ply with 1/16 be an issue on the chines, top deck or top sponsons? If I choose to model a boat that has an exposed wooden deck, the poplar ply will need to go. I have to agree on the chines, leave the thicker ply. On the deck, however, I personally would go down to 1/16 ply due to the complex curves (thinner bends easier) and, if you want a more realistic look, you would really need to laminate a thin mahogany vaneer to the deck as that was what the plywood most of the older round nosed boats were built with was made from
Thanks....

Thanks for the input guys. I ended up using the 1/8" ply for the rear chines. My original plan was to use some 2" poly tape I have that is a bit thicker than packing tape and stretches just a little bit. Then I was going to just use CA in the middle and then use Epoxy on the rest of it and then tape it the rest of the way. I ended up using CA on the entire thing!

As far as other tapes...I have used Duct Tape before but it generally leaves a lot of glue behind when removed...Masking Tape wants to cut itself when wrapped around sharp edges. I really like the Poly Tape.

I really wanted to stay away from the CA because I am one of those people that has an allergy to it...itchy eyes, headache, nausea...I am OK with using small amounts normally but this bit required a lot. I'll survive.

Oh yeah...I did manage to glue my shoe to the floor LOL.

Glad to help out!! I agree on the duct tape... are you still going to point the nose to match Miss Madison?? you will have to post pics of progress so we can see!!I also have a JAE.45 Twin, a JAE.45 and a A-BOX crackerbox (all ZIPPKITS) on bench right now! have the twin, the .45,a A-BOX and a V-BOX to build for Zippkits to display for TOLEDO EXPO and WRAMS show.. I love my job!
Keep us posted on your build!!

The Madison is still a contender as of now, however there are other possibilities. The front part of the hull (where the sponson tops attach) is a bit wonky from the original owners attempt at construction. I am considering the possibility of a conversion to a smooth top (Rivett). I'll post some pics once I am to a point that is non-standard...unless someone really wants to see it?

I have built the JAE12, JAE FE, and JAE21. They really turned out nice and perform great to boot! The most difficult part is building the sponsons...not really difficult, just time consuming and you need to be careful about getting the brass tubes set in just right.

Yup, it's important to get sponsons right.. I had to fiddle with the JAE.21 tubes as well, but the .45 twin and the .45 tubes were right on,no adjustment... the .21 is a blast!! breaking in the new N/R 5 port and getting faster every run.. now this thing called winter... really looking forward to spring to be able to run again.. We expanded our club pond and are having impba races this year and even the D-1 big race there... cant wait!!!

Congrats to you and the club for hosting it's first race! I know there is a lot of work involved. Kind of hoping Spring holds off a bit so I can get my boats finished...

I decided to post some pictures even though there hasn't been any ground breaking progress...and there have been a few other Rivett/Rockett builds posted. I have included one picture of the transom showing how the rear chines are attached like the new Bullitt. I actually have the chines sanded a bit more than I intended, as I wanted to leave some overhang so I could sand out any potential dings that may occur during handling through the next stages of the build. Hopefully I will get the transom doubler on today.

the hull looks similar to the Bullitt.. thanks for the best luck on hosting our first race.. we will have 3 nys series daces and in aug. we will host the D-1 big race... pretty pumped... I am just getting back into race boats after playing with r/c airplanes for quite a while.. got bored with boats back then cause there were no other boaters in area.. no fun playin alone!!! with the planes the saying "go big or stay home is on too... I have a 55cc extra 330 and a 27%pitts m-12 with a 70cc and now the latest is a 111cc 108" extra 260...
keep us posted on your build!!

Those are some really BIG planes! I have actually gone the other direction with my flying...I really like the micro planes from Great Planes and E-Flite. I don't need to travel but a few blocks just to get a quick flying fix.

I hope to get some work done tomorrow on both the Rockett and my Gas Scale...it's going to be 54 degrees! So I need to take advantage of the weather before it gets back to freeeeezing.

Not much progress lately, I have really been bugging on how to do the sponsons on the Gas Scale...I think that I have that figured out.

I did blow the Newton plans up 10% for the Miss Madison, and it looks like the Rockett scales up pretty good...especially when I add the pointy bit to the front. I had the boat at work, and from just looking at pictures, I managed to come up with a shape exactly like that of the plans. Now if I can just manage such a feat when I actually perform the operation.

I also plan to do some modifications to the rear cowl to make it sit a bit lower and look a bit more scale. I don't think this should be too difficult.

On a sad note...I have been waffling on doing the Miss Madison...Looking at the "Burien Lady" or maybe the "Smyth Smoother Mover". Both (actually the same boat) had completely exposed wooden decks and sponson tops....

Been working on the Gas Scale so nothing to report. In the meantime...I have been considering some other options and just can't quit thinking about doing one of my exposed wood deck options. I have no idea how to go about this, so I have been doing some research and have started some evil experiments with planking!

Nice shot of the inside cockpit BM I added a micro balloon and epoxy mix to the front edge of the brim. Then re-sand the area. Making the bond area twice as big around the front rim, before adding the top skin. The extra weight isn't much. Gotta add weight in the bow anyways .A 1 OZ cup of the mix will go a long way. You don't want the mix runny ,you will have a problem then. Talcum power will also work as a filler.
