This thread will show the painting and weathering of Ali's Mig-21 in Iranian Air Force colour scheme.

The paint masks I drew up and cut, the paints came from my local paint factors and are all cellelous, the decals are supplied by Taylor made decals, Germany.

The weathering will be my usual artist oils and the clear coat will be a 20% satin finish.

Firstly here is the scheme that we will reproduce.

Interesting and informative Phil, thank you for sharing. Can I ask the reason that you are doing the markings first before applying the base coat?

Cheers
Red

It's been ages since I have had a Mig 21. Its a great aeroplane and one that I am really looking forward to flying again. Especially after Phil has finished working his magic!

Looks really nice! The Mig-21 is a really interesting jet to me in a lot of ways.

As a side note I notice some threads (like this one) have these huge photos posted while other threads have small thumb nail pics that can be then selected and viewed in fill. Is there any individual control when we post, that we can post smaller thumb nail photos so the thread doesn't take ages to load? Then the pictures of interest can be clicked on individually. Or is this a new problem with RCU itself? RCU seems to be pretty "buggy" these days.

Hi red,

When I start to learn about painting I was always told to paint light to dark, easy to cover a light colour with a darker one.

As a lot of military aircraft have very dark camo's that is why I do it like this. I am not saying this is the correct way but it works for me and I may have paint a few aircraft this way and it seems to work.

Glad you are enjoying the thread.

Next stage is a very boring stage but very important, masking up, if you mess this up the whole model will look crap.

After removing the masking off the lower insignia myself and Ali have decided to modify it slightly, make the green band a bit thicker and the centre logo a bit thicker as well, this will now be done at the end of the paint process.

Al, it was your last 21 that got me interested in jets at the Nats some four years ago, cost me a lot of wonga that model! Brought me a lot of pleasure though.

Great and informative thread Phil.

I would say as a side note Phil, the painting looks totally fine and although most would apply livery / badges etc afterwards, the way that you're doing it will mean the paint will be nice and even without an overlay like you see with most decals that are applied!

Keep up the good work mate!

Hi Craig. No Phil Did not build this Mig, it was built by another friend of mine Paul Metcalf. He also built and rebuilt my first Mig 21 all those years ago!

Gary.... So I am to blame... Sorry Uk Jet Scene Only kidding mate. Was it only four years ago? Feels like allot more, in fact I am sure it was 5 or 6. Either way. Glad it helped get you started in the jet side of the super hobby!
Is it done yet Phil?

As a matter of interest Al I just checked my jet flight logs and my first flight was with a Sprint in Jan 09 which means I first saw you at the Nats in 2008 with the Mig 21 and the Globemaster, don't time fly!

Thanks again for helping get me started mate!
